Was the E-E's shields up when they lost the core?
Yes, but that initial strike was heavier than normal for the battle, comprising of many photon torpedoes IIRC. That initial salvo would have probably destroyed the Enterprise D outright, but the Enterprise E shielding absorbed most of the punishment and only lost the warp core to precise targeting and weapon concentration.

On topic, as I understand it shielding systems pump exotic particle clouds around the ship which are held in place with fields of force. Weapon strikes are absorbed and re-radiated by the particle cloud which handily explains the visual effects. However sufficiently energized particles can escape the shield grid, causing the particle density and thus shield effectiveness to go down in measurable increments, hence the 'shields are at 60%!' we hear so often.

Old model shields need to come off line to recharge the supplies of particles--assuming no components of the shield generator hardware were damaged in the attack--but the kind of regenerative shield system used by the Prometheus and the Enterprise E are capable of recharging the particle count during use, at a rate that makes a difference in combat (shields could always do this, but slowly).
Did the Scimitar actually fire any photons in the whole battle? I only recall it using disrupters. As for the alpha strike, it wasn't all that impressive for a ship that has 52 disrupter banks.

Maybe conventional shields regenerate only when they are not raised ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

A) Yes photons were fired; they were yellowish while the disruptors were bluish B) The alpha strike represented what was needed to disable the warp core without destroying the ship outright, so it is naturally less than you expect it is fully capable of.
"Do not worry, I have prepared something for just such an emergency."

"You're prepared for a giant monster made entirely of nulls stomping around Mainframe?!"

"That is correct!"

"How do you plan for that?"

"Uh... lucky guess?"

I understand now. Must be my shitty tv as I couldn't see any difference in the scimitar weapons.

The best example of photons is when the Valdor streaks past directly over the Scimitar, when Shinzon chucks a Mavrick, causing them to overshoot. The Scimitar fires something like a dozen photons at point blank range in rapid fire into them, blasting their engines and disabling her.

And the E-E took a *hell* of a pounding before he was able to take out the warp core (and Port Nacelle for that matter).

They took the first hit a split second after Picard realised that flying through a sensor/communications blocking rift while probably being pursued is NOT a good idea.

We then see the attack from Shinzons POV.l Scimitar is firing two weapons in a constent pounding on a specific shield point (I think right above the Warp Core from memory) at a rate of something like 3 or so shots per second. Assuming they kept this rate up since the first attack, the E-E would have taken quite a pounding.

Their warp core would have been active at this point, but that is balanced by the fact that the core was busy powering the warp drive at maximum warp. Of course I find it very hard to belive that the Scimitar could keep up with the fastest Federation Starship ever built (bar the Prometheus)...but given its size and energy reserves, put into the thoery that its just a modified Dominion prototype, it makes some sense.

I have seen somewere a statement from Sovereign designer about that regenerative part. If I good remember, regenerative means "two-layer" shielding. They can cross each other and only one layer is shoot at, while the other regain it's strength. When the upper layer is weaker then the second one, they switch places.
[quote:c986e33691]Comparing and basing weapons strengths based on movie special effects isn't an accurate way of judging firepower. Simply because those effects are the results of what the producers and directors want to see on screen.[/quote:c986e33691]

That sounds alot like the idea of "secondary shields", such as those on the Scimitar.

Any evidence?

I got the impression
The shields on other ships need more power to regen but regenitive uses the power you are sending it and regen
