Although Lt. Reed's "Phase pistols" still lack the proper aiming devices they are shaped more like a modern hand pistol than the TNG and TOS phasers. They just have a very bulky barrel, but there is a barrel.

The grip is about perpendicular to the barrel for precise aiming, but I have seen the phase pistol perform some "off axis" shooting when Reed attempted to hit a Xindi probe in "The Shipment"

What surprises me are the MACO arms. Although the MACO's in the 22nd century haven't found a use for phasers yet, they still use plasma and EM based rifles and pistols for combat. The MACO's are much better equipped than the Marines I saw in AR-558.

here is a better closeup of an Enterprise phaser. rather bulky compared to other designs, imo.
