They're probably a lot like any other convention.

They're rather fun, there are the people who go all out and dress up, some who come partly decorated, wearing badges etc. Usually it is a fun light atmosphere.

The ones near us held auctions of various sci-fi related items, I got a conversational Klingon tape for $20. Leading me to be invited to join the Klingon Empire of Australia, which I of course accepted. :D

Never been in any sci-fi convention myself, and never bothered to look either. Maybe someday I will, see what the fuss is about. Heck, maybe I'll my hands on a really cool Borg cube for a display or something. :D

I don't know about larger than normal. Just a stick up his/her ass would differentiate them enough for me.

The Trekkie is the fan that isn't afraid to admit to being a fan or qualify his/her fandom in some such way.

I have enough Trek stuff in my house that if someone who doesn't like sci-fi came by they would think I'm one of those "Trekkie Freaks" so in some cases its a matter of perspective.

However, I still think there is something a little wrong with a woman who decides to wear her TNG uniform every day and even wears it to jury duty.
