What's Angel Egg about?

So, showing this to a friend that just got dumped by his girlfriend is a definite no-no?
Exactly, though sometimes watching something sad helps if you're already in a sort of depression. Maybe you could find something only a little sad, and non-romantic... Lain?
For depression and at least a good story building, go with some funny comedy, Nadesico all the way.
It even makes fun of relationships.

Evangelion: Kinda sad, since Shinji and the girl at the end are the only people alive on the planet afterwards. At least they'll have fun repopulating it ;P

I thought the part with Unit-02 being torn up was a bit disturbing, but not overtly so.

Lain: It actually was pretty depressing, finding out she was created just to merge the Wired and the real world, her family wasn't really her family, etc. She eventually erased herself from everybody's memory... That's pretty sad.

Grave of the Fireflys: I think I remember seeing this... It's the WW2 era film, right? It was good, but I personally didn't find that too depressing.

Saikano was really sad towards the end. The two people elope, run away, girl only has a few days to live, Japan attacked, world destroyed, etc.

EoE gets the title for most disturbing, in my book at least. There is something unsettling about characters you've watched for 26 episodes splatter into goo.

Depressing? VoH anime or Saikano. In the end, Chise is helpless and can't prevent the world from ending, but this is dulled by the fact that it isn't explained exactly how the world ended and WHY it did. Hameln has lots of loose ends, but ends up being depressing because there isn't any hope in the end. Hamel, like his father, probably lost his soul to Kestra. Raiel loses a dear friend forever, and won't be able to have revenge for his dead parents; he also loses most of his caravan which was his only family after Mazoku Hamel killed his parents. Sizer still feels betrayed by Pandora and lost the chance to see her father. Flute will eventually open Pandora's Box out of her love and desire to see Hamel again and hell will break lose, repeating the cycle.

A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

The Rurouni Kenshin Seisouhen OVA was very depressing.

After watching the series and seeing the greatness of Kenshin, defeating hundreds of people and saving countless others, you see him totally fall apart with no defense.

Yes, it is. It happens at the end of the war and the historical setting of the beginning of the movie was the firebombing of the city of Kobe.

And I'm doubting you saw it, if you are claiming that it wasn't too depressing. :P

Grave of the Fireflies is one of those movies you want to watch maybe once a year. Any more than that probably isn't good for your mental well-being.

For disturbing, I'd say Kite all the way. I was pretty much in tears by the end of Grave of the Fireflies. I was also in tears at certain points in Eva, but it was more like the beauty/art was overwhelming.

Today I purchased Voices of a Distant Star.

Absolutely beautiful.

(Although I might have a defective disc, as the audio for the Japanese and Director's version are identical.)

Yeah, I remember it now. I wasn't too sure of the title. Mother dies, boy goes off with his sister, etc... Saw that in Japanese class. I wasn't really saddened by it since I couldn't really relate...

I haven't seen Grave of the Firefly's yet, nor black bible, or lain....

I have seen X & Kite, I personally am a strong fan of the single death tagedy. Thus Ninja Scroll was fairly depressing for me.

ADV fucked up the first batch of DVDs by forgetting to include the audio for the Director's version.

Well, there is an audio track for the Director's Version, but it sounds like the normal Japanese track.

So I'm guessing I should look back on ANN or Anime on DVD and check to see about contacting ADV, huh?

My disc is the same way.

My only issue with Voices of a Distant Star was that I thought it was too short. It seemed like it stopped in the middle of the story.

For Voices, a recall was issued some time back. The text posted to animeondvd.com read (before it was taken down):
We have identified and corrected the problem with the alternate Japanese track on the Voices of a Distant Star release. If you have a Voices of a Distant Star disc you would like to replace, follow these instructions.

Email ADV Customer Service at "returns @ advfilms.com". Use of this email address, rather than the normal Customer Service email address, will speed your claim. Include your name, email and shipping address.

You will be sent a form letter to complete and a pre-addressed, pre-paid shipping envelope via UPS.

Complete the form letter; put the form letter and your Voices of a Distant Star disc in the envelope; and drop it in the nearest UPS shipping box.

As soon as ADV receives the old disc, a corrected disc will be shipped to you.

Please be sure to complete the form fully, carefully and legibly to hasten the return process.

It's an independant anime developed by one man. He did the cells, backgrounds, everything except the female voices.

As someone who has seen both GotF and Angel's Egg, I'd say that this is correct.
Although I might be off a bit, since I saw Angel's Egg something like six years ago.

Then again look at what it's about. :P

Besides it's one of the few he'd enjoy given the context and the lack of many associative properties of most anime.
