Don't you think that such a massive force, rated at gigaton-level, capable of covering vast swaths of space and obliterate giant asteroids, would affect the air above and below it as well? While also generating not inconsiderable quantities of heat?

So, if you're just a few feet above or below the gigaton-level ring of expanding quite-possibly superheated material, you're safe?

Try waving a stick underwater. Even though the stick isn't, you know, thick, it still generates a current that can be felt above and below its line.

Well maybe more than a few feet then  .
As to the heat and strength of the shockwave, that'd depend on the speed of the ring (anyone got anything useful for this?). The 12 gigaton figure in the ICS book isn't really that helpful because of the nature of the weapon - it doesn't use that energy in a conventional way. I don't think the shockwave itself would generate significant heat - it didn't appear to on the asteroids - so we'd need to use the speed of its expansion for something based on drag.
So, is that shockwave strong enough to kill a clone / storm trooper? Not so sure myself, although I'd like to see what those with an inkling of physics say :P .

Well, it is a mighty powerful weapon. So being anywhere near an exploding one of those would be a Bad Thing.

I'm sorry, what did you say? I was busy being a misogynist xenophobe and oppressing alien scum for the glory of the Emperor.... Oh wait, you were questioning my loyalty... tell you what, which one of us is standing in really shiney armour and holding a blaster rifle and will probably die for the glory of the Emperor and which one sits in an office as a yes-man?

Not you. Your good, I'm ranting about the other people who seem to not understand the glory of Palpatine.

Oh and In-Fucking_Formant just because I like the yes man gig doesn't mean I'm not in the field. I am at more risk because I could be caught as a "traitor" you on the other can die in combat.

As I recall, the Rebels didn't "take" the X-Wing away from the Impierals. The Impieral Navy just didn't want it. Since it didn't fit their philosophy of dogfighting. They also had the Assault Gunboat, which more or less fit the role of a long range, high powered, individualized starfighter just fine.

Of course that being said I am also disappointed the Navy would turn down such a design.

Too late, he's already in the employ of the 7th Heavy Assault Stormtrooper Division, or the Shock Stormtroopers.
