Trills

Post by Gil Hamilton »

Have you noticed that Trills changed between TNG and DS9? In TNG, the humanoid portion of the Trill symbiote were spottless and had forehead ridges over their frontal prominences. But in DS9, they are outwardly completely human, except for the spots that went down their bodies. Interesting. Another species change in StarTrek.

Actually, yes. The last time I saw that episode was quite a while ago.

Well you saw the species evolution they want to do with humans.

We have always looked like Gila Monsters!

It's possible that the "Trill" are really the slugs, while the hosts can be anyone - it's possible that the two host species we see - Jadzia with her cute spots, and Odan with his cro-magnon forehead - inhabit the same area of space, perhaps even the same planet, and therefore share the responsibilities of symbiosis.

Graham Kennedies explanation that there are two species of trill hosts seems to be reasonable in explaining the difference between TNG and DS9 trills.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Not to mention DS9 changed the "do not transport on pain of death" thingy the TNG Trills had
"Of course, what would really happen is that in Game 7, with the Red Sox winning 20-0 in the 9th inning, with two outs and two strikes on the last Cubs batter, a previously unseen meteor would strike the earth, instantly and forever wiping out all life on the planet, and forever denying the Red Sox a World Series victory..."

I suspect that has less to do with a physiological concern and more to do with the whole "I don't want my atoms scrambled and put back together again like a jigzaw puzzle." I sure as hell wouldn't want to go through one. :?

Thats for sure Stofsk, not many sane people would I think

Plus from a production standpoint, it makes it easier for the Dax character to go on landing parties like the rest of the cast, instead of via shuttle only :)

Actually, Dr. Crusher directly states that transporters would have damaged the worm.

Then she was obviously fucking wrong if Jadzia Dax, and other Trills, can use transporters quite comfortably. (it's easier to believe the character is an idiot when inconsistencies like these crop up. )

I think they just fucked up and didn't care.

Although maybe Odan was a paranoid genmod.

And what is Dax? Dax is a pretty damn old symbiote itself.

Dax is over 300 years old. It is indeed a pretty old symbiant.

Old to us. For all we know Odan could be a millenia old. We have no idea of the life span of a symbiant.

Good point. Odan could be much older than Dax.

Which was my original point. I surmise from Odin when he talked about himself it seemed like he had been visiting the planet in hte episode for milleninia and the natives all thought he was the decendant of their trusted Odan.

Not millenia. They thought that current body of Odan was the son of the original Odan, which doesn't say that he's ancient. He did say that the hosts species and the worms had been doing the symbiosis thing for millenia, however.

Plus, I'm pretty sure that it was said that the Dax symbiote was a pretty old one and incredibly well travelled. If transport effect older Trills then it should surely effect Dax.

Maybe they only recently adjusted the biofilter protocols on transporter pads...after all, I would assume that one needn't re-introduce E-coli to your gut after each transport.
