Spike TV: "Trek, UNCUT!"

Post by Icehawk »

Anyone who watches TNG on Spike TV should know about these ads. What exactly do they mean by "Uncut"? The episodes seem exactly the same everytime I watched them, nothing seems to be added or changed. What the hell is Spike talking about?

The only thing different that I noticed is that there were far fewer commercial breaks.

My guess is that a lot of episodes had scenes cut so that they could fit more commercial breaks into it. Being "uncut" means that there will probably be fewer commercial breaks (so instead of a 40 mins episode with 20 mins ads, you'll get a 50 mins episode with 10 mins ads). But this is just a guess. Unless they're secretly referring to "Sex Trek: The Next Penetration" or somesuch... :D 8)

I heard two part episodes had some scenes cut when shown in syndication. Perhaps uncut means those scenes will be shown.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Thats pretty much it. Most two part episodes had scenes cut for syndication. Also, two hour specials like the first episode had the same problem in syndication. It's simply the entire two parters with less commercials.

Trek Uncut is when Spike shows the two-part episodes back to back. TV stations are natorious for showing syndicated shows so out of order they won't even air two-part episodes together. Trek Uncut is Spike's way of putting the two-part episodes back together. I also get the impression they add some deleted scenes it would seem.

It used to be TNN - The Nashville Network. Then they changed Nashville to National and started to vary their programming. This was when they started showing TNG. Several months ago they changed their name to Spike, and billed themselves as "the first network for men." So the upshot is if you used to have TNN, then you now have Spike (unless your cable company dropped it for some reason). It's one of the older cable stations, around back when there were maybe a dozen basic cable stations. I know Comcast carries Spike in North Georgia, but I am sure they have different line-ups in different markets so I have no idea if your local cable company carries it, but I would expect they do. Do you have any competition? I didn't think there were any markets left with more than one cable provider.

I've been watching Trek Uncut for a while and my impression is simply that they dont run commercials at critical moments during the show.

Actually, I was looking forward to tonights episodes where they go back into time in old SF and Data loses his head.

But they are playing Star Trek IV instead.

It's too bad they can't do this with TOS. TOS came at a time when 51 minute episodes with 9 minutes of commercials were common, now Sci-Fi guts the damn things to cut them down by about 20%.

Yeah, pretty much what you guys have all said. The "Nitpicker's Guide for Classic Trekkers" for example has a list of all the cuts made for TV (to put in more commercials).

When TV shows go into reruns, they're routinely trimmed to add more commercials--watch an episode of The Simpsons in reruns and then watch the same one on DVD to see just how stark the difference is. It's nice to see Spike isn't doing that crap and airing the episodes in order.
