The Undiscovered Country SCE DVD
Well, it finally came out, and I finally picked it up. I am now the proud owner of the Star Trek VI Special Collector's Edition DVD. Now that I have viewed both disk in almost their entirity, I must say that it was worth the wait. This thing fucking rocks! Unfortunately, I don't see myself ever buying another Trek DVD, as all the recent movies suck donkey balls. If you are still debating wether or not to purchase this fine peice of Sci-fi art, you are wrong! You should have already done bought it!
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Re: The Undiscovered Country SCE DVD
I had been thinking about purchasing it but I recently rewatched my VHS tape and found I wasn't as fond of the film as I remembered. Too many of the nits I've seen here plus all the stuff I've read on what could (should) have been.Wicked Pilot wrote:Well, it finally came out, and I finally picked it up. I still like the movie well enough but since my tape is still good I think I'm planning on sticking with it for the time being.

Related Question: Would the film have been considered the best of the Trek films if Saavik had been the traitor as originally intended? I mean, then we have a personal betrayal for both Kirk and Spock, not to mention tieing in II,III and IV, or would it have been too much?

I think that would have been the ultimate betrayal for Kirk, since his son died while saving her.The_Lumberjack wrote:Related Question: Would the film have been considered the best of the Trek films if Saavik had been the traitor as originally intended? Ooh man. They really should have gone with Saavik then.
I could even see Saavik trying to justify it because of David's death. She was just doing it so they wouldn't save the Klingons and they would remain adversaries, perhaps letting the Klingon species die out just because of David (a little non-Vulcan emotionalism creaping into that decision).
I hadn't thought about David dying to protect her (mostly because I don't like ST III all that much). I suppose that would have been too dramatic for the suits in charge of Trek, or was this Roddenberry's call? He could make some dumb ass decisions for the stupidest reasons sometimes.

They couldnt get the actress to do it, I believe, so they had to go with Valeris instead. Is this worth splitting? I didnt really mean to hijack too much.Tsyroc wrote:Montcalm wrote:I think that would have been the ultimate betrayal for Kirk, since his son died while saving her.The_Lumberjack wrote:Related Question: Would the film have been considered the best of the Trek films if Saavik had been the traitor as originally intended? Well, I've heard both "Roddenberry didn't want Saavik as the traitor" and "they couldn't get Kristie Alley or Robin Curtis into the movie".

I'm pretty sure that I've read an interview with Robin Curtis that states she was available and waiting for them to call her. I lean more toward Roddenberry's involvement.Steve wrote:Well, I've heard both "Roddenberry didn't want Saavik as the traitor" and "they couldn't get Kristie Alley or Robin Curtis into the movie".
If it had been Saavik the movie would not have ended on as hopeful a note as it did, and we know Roddenberry liked that hopeful future stuff.
The ending would have been the same but I think that a betrayal by Saavik (especially if she were the mother of Spock's kid from ST III) would have had more impact than the betrayal of a character we hadn't seen before this movie.

The seven years between III and VI might have also been a bit of a factor. A significant portion of the audience might not have known who Saavik was or about her importence three movies ago (not everybody sees all the films in a series).

I believe in a sign of Zeta.

That's a good point but I think a decent writer could catch those people up pretty well. Have Bones make some comment to Spock about the "Mrs" have him explain that they aren't married and that they only happen to have a child because Saavik was helping him on the Genesis planet.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:The seven years between III and VI might have also been a bit of a factor. That could jive with what everyone is saying. It just means that they didn't like Robin Curtis as Saavik as much as they did Kirstie Alley (I know I didn't) and Meyer had worked with Alley before (STII). So Robin Curtis really could have been available and willing to play Saavik but wasn't contacted because Meyer wanted Alley back or to go a different route.Uraniun235 wrote:Listening to Meyer's commentary, it appears Saavik did not appear because Kirstie Alley did not want to reprise her role.
They probably should have gone with another character in STIII as well. There was no reason why Saavik had to be one of the people studying the Genesis planet.
