What was Harry thinking??

Post by TurboPhaser »

I don't usually do this, but I realise the most utterly stupid and ridiculous thing done by a Starfleet Officer has been done by Harry. He shoulda been thrown in the brig for dereliction of duty!

This is what he did.

Episode: Fair Haven.

Crew has created a quaint Irish village. Janeway falls in love. Ship is caught in a space storm.

Towards the end of the episode, the ship was having trouble escaping and they began to divert power to the deflector to 'cut' a path through the storm. The ship was barely holding together when the power transfer order was given.

Harry however, obviously had other things on his mind. He said something like:

'Captain, there isnt enough time to deactivate the holodeck, we'll lose most of Fair Haven!'

Argh! Hello? The ship is about to be destroyed! Hello?! Who cares about the freaking holodeck! Even if his concern was for Janeway and her boyfriend, that was not the time!
If the ship explodes, there wont be any Fair Haven anyway!

Does anybody else think this was utterly incomprehensible behaviour? For someone who had 6 years experience, in the DQ no less.
Voyager summed up in 1 quote:

Neelix: These people dont appreciate what they have! This ship is the match of anything in a hundred lightyears, yet what do they do with it?
(fake voice) Oh, well lets go find some space anomaly today that'll rip it apart!

Part of the problem was that Voyager added a new piece of uber dork technobable: "photonic." Since "photonic" life forms all of the sudden became common (we even see some in Boobyprise), these Fair Haven holos were like real life forms.

Lameway should have executed his stupid ass for even saying something that stupid. I would have.

They should've just saved the "photonic lifeforms" onto the computer. They've done that in TNG.

Modern Star Trek writers like to force drama into places where it doesn't belong. They're crazy like that.

If you're referring to Professor Moriartie (I apologize for my hideous spelling), I believe he nearly went insane while he was just data in the E-D's computer and nearly destroyed the ship when Barclay loaded him up while trying to fix the problems to the holodecks he'd caused. Though, that was a damn stupid thing Harry did.

I don't think he went insane... I think he was just pissed that he was basically tucked away and forgotten.

I'll also note that Janeway for once didn't hesitate. She actualy sounded somewhat pissed at Harry for bringing up Fair Haven when she asked for the power.

But wasn’t the reason they had to start rationing replicator power, but not holo power because the power used to run the holodecks “incompatible” with the rest of the ships power systems? In that case, the power from the holodeck wouldn’t have worked anyway.

Um , I think they had to ration the replicator not because of power supply limit but because of the limit of available materials for the replicator to use to replicate from. Plus the mess hall also would serve to help the crew bond better and make them a better team.
