Picard's fighting ability and a record of his fights
How good of a HTH fighter is Picard? What are the fights he has been in?

kirk was easily a much better fighter than picard. we don't see picard in too many HTH fights during next gen, and the ones he was in he usually got stomped. (sauren being the main example. and the naussican fight, he got a knife through the heart)

In "Tapestry" we see he wasn't doing to badly against the naussicans he was doing well aginst all three untill the one behind him pulled a knife.Darth_Zod wrote:kirk was easily a much better fighter than picard. we don't see picard in too many HTH fights during next gen, and the ones he was in he usually got stomped. A book with Shatner's name on it, no less.Lord Pounder wrote:In The Return Picard and Shatner actually end up in a fight. Kirk was owning him, however this doesn't count because it was a book.
Still, the impression I get is that that outcome is more than plausible. Picard's always came across as the diplomat -- Kirk seemed more the soldier type.

Picard wasn't doing too badly, though he was wearing body armor and Kirk was half-crazy from the neural implants he had at the time. The rejuvenation process also had Kirk at his physical peak I think. This wasn't made entirely clear in the book but it seemed to be the implication.Lord Pounder wrote:In The Return Picard and Shatner actually end up in a fight. Still, that does seem consistent with Picard's and Kirk's fights with Soran. Picard got thumped fairly quickly while Kirk was fairly even with Soran. Which as Raoul Duke Jr. points out is consistent with their different personalities and histories.
In addition to Tapestry, didn't Picard also have a couple of hand to hand fights in Starship Mine (a.k.a. Die Hard in Space)? He was also accosted by a pair of Klingons in Sins of the Father. IIRC correctly on that occasion he took out the first guy but was losing to the second when the maid saved Picard by shooting the second assassin in the back.
Assuming I'm remembering everything correctly, Picard has enough basic combat training to take out a single foe who doesn't have a lot of training but against multiple opponents or a single well-trained one he'll go down after the inevitable heroic struggle.
Unless he channels that Gurney Halleck dude Patrick Stewart played in Dune. Then he kicks monkey ass.

I dimly recall that, but I'm not sure. One thing I am sure of is that Picard can think tactically/strategically - he was going up against terrorists or pirates, and he wasn't doing too bad.Joe Momma wrote:In addition to Tapestry, didn't Picard also have a couple of hand to hand fights in Starship Mine (a.k.a. He did deck Riker in "Gambit" so surely that shows his mastery of Picarte-do.
That sounds like a fairly decent assumption to make; he's not exactly Bruce Lee, but he ain't no pushover either.Joe Momma wrote:Assuming I'm remembering everything correctly, Picard has enough basic combat training to take out a single foe who doesn't have a lot of training but against multiple opponents or a single well-trained one he'll go down after the inevitable heroic struggle.

while considering Picard's fighting ability one also has to remember how old he is and that people his age aren't generally in his shape much less able to fight at all.
