Kobayashi Maru

Post by Enola Straight »

What does "Kobayashi Maru" translate from Japanese?

I googled without success.

I'm not sure but it was taken from an Asian family that lived next door to Roddenberry, the Kobyashi Marus.

Just another example that you can find anything on the net.
Kobayashi Maru (n) (from "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

Transliteration of Hiragana: ko-ba-ya-shi-ma-ru
Rough pronunciation: koh-bah-yah-shi-mah-roo
Note: Kobayashi is a common family name. Maru is a suffix that indicates ship's name.
Taken from: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~VZ4S-KUBC/ejdic.html

which is a website apparently devoted to translating Japanese references in Star Trek.

Kobyashi might be the family name, but as Sidious pointed out Maru is simply a suffix attached to the end of a Japanese merchant vessel.

Well, it seems pretty simple then. The Kobayashi part came from some family, and Maru was added because the ship that Starfleet captains have to use in the simulation is a merchant vessel IIRC.

I remember the Kobayashi Maru being mentioned in Star Trek, but I can't remember where or in connection with what. Episode name, anyone?

Yeah, but them don't count. :P

Besides, it's the easiest example.

It's still part of Star Trek so it counts, even if it's not canon. :P

The ship in the senario was called the Kobayashi Maru. You guys say that a Japanese family name and a suffix attached to the end of a Japanese merchant vessel. LOGIC PREVAILS AGAIN.

It's about where the name of the ship came from and what it means.

Not what the name was.
