M-class planet(what does that mean?)

Ok, what exactly is an M-class planet and why is it called that?(I know that's what Earth is, but why Mensura class?)

It's part of an alphabetical classification system based on atmospheric and geological conditions of a planet.

I'm pretty sure it's a Vulcan word. Maybe it means inhabitable by humanoids.

I've seen M-class used to denote a livable planet in at least a bajillion video games. Never knew it all came from Trek.
