Quantum Torps & Romulans

Post by Kitsune »

Curious how long do you think Romulans will take develop a torpedo which is the equivelent? Also, do you think the Federation would have given the technology during the Dominion war?

Romulans already have a powerful torpedo. The Plasma Torpedo. Romulans typicaly don't use torpedoes often and Schinzon even went so far as to equip his ship with Photon Torpedoes. This does not change the fact that Romulans do indeed have Plasma Torpedoes and their D'Deridex warbirds are known to have torpedo capacity.

As for the Plasma Torpedo. Watch Tears of the Prophets. These torpedoes make Quantum Torpedoes look like fire crackers.

I was under the impression that plasma torps were more powerful, but slower and less accurate.

They appear to be slower but they showed similar accuracy to Starfleet torpedoes.

Could you elaborate? My copy of the battle scenes from TOTP doesn't demonstrate this.

I seem to remeber them talking about them but not any pictures of what the torpedoes can do. Acciording to the DS-9 manual (I know, not official but the only source I have) that they have photon torpedo launchers and the TNG episone where the alien computer tries to reprogram the Enterprise, a Romulan warbird fires what looks like a photon torp, I believe.

Plasma Torpedoes tear right through shields and leave gapping holes in ships. The USS Galaxy nearly had the engineering section pierced clean through with a small volley.

That's right. The weapons platforms had plasma torpedoes......forgot about that.

I thought that the Feds didn't loose a single Galaxy class after the Oddessey in the war?

I wouldn't go as far as saying that volley nearly pierced clean through, and the USS Galaxy was never showed to have been destroyed in that battle. It does however show us that the touchy warp core isn't so much of a problem in the later flight of GCS.

Actually they lost at least one more.

In DS9 "The Changing Face of Evil" you can see the stardrive section of a GCS, the saucer being completely blown away.

Couple things.

First, we don't know how many, if any, Galaxy class ships were lost. Second, the Oddessey was not lost in the war. Third, the USS Galaxy while damaged at Chintoka was repaired and put back in service. Its registry number showed up in Nemesis.

Forth, the Galaxy I'm preaty sure took hits from heavy disruptors, not plasma Torpedoes.

I also don't think Plasma Torpedoes have any kind of guidence or course corrective ability, making them strictly a close range heavy hitter. I mean the shields protecting the subspace power plant in TOTP shrugged off phaser photon and quantum fire. A dozen or two plasma torepdoes slaming into it though blew right through. Unless they were able to lower the shields.

Damar lists plasma torpedoes when reading the weapons layout for the weapons platforms.

I know. But they clearly had both Plasma Torpedoes and Disruptor cannons.

The USS Galaxy takes multiple plasma torpedo hits to the saucer section.

It appears the the weapons platforms use the plasma torpedos to bring the shields down and then use the heavy disruptors to tear the ship apart.
