Sothis wrote:I always thought DS9 stood apart from Voyager quite nicely. In fact, looking over their respective 7 year runs, DS9 had a lot more in the way of character growth and more interesting characters to begin with (Kira, Dax, Odo) than Voyager ever did. DS9 actually did things with the characters, whereas Voyager totally ignored some (Kim, Chakotay, Neelix, Kes). It's a shame actually- early on, Neelix actually had some strong moments (such as when he saw Dr Jektrel, and looked like his head would explode with rage).
That's why DS9 is my favorite Trek - how important the characters, both main and guests, were. Being set on a station that didn't go anywhere allowed rich storylines that ran as long as a few episodes (House of Quark) to the entire series (sisko and the Prophets for example). It's the same reason why I liked Fellowship of the Ring over Two Towers; TT was more battles than storytelling.

Meh. The Bajoran religion didn't do anything for me. But then, I'm not a fan of soap-opera-in-space... I think character development should serve the story and not vice-versa.
a cast of mostly no-talent ciphers who couldn't out-act concrete.
Beltran admitted that he stopped putting effort into it because the scripts were shit.

The story arcs, while a great assest, was also probably its greatest weakness - unless you had been with the series from the start, you wouldn't get half what was going on, namely the Bajoran religion and Dominion subplots.

I remember that many of the actors who were playing humans were told be be bland so that alien characters could have unique characteristics.

I loved where DS9 went, they had a decent war going, though I didn't like how it was resolved. The Dominion was supposed to have been near beating the Federation and Klingons, then all of a sudden, the Romulans come it and they start to win. To much like WW2 for me. Though admittedly I can't think of another way to end it.

They could have had the Federation & co. lose and use that to lead into another series. That would have screwed up TNG movies though. :)

Actually, that brings up an amusing thought I've been having - pretend for a moment that the Dominion had won and skip forward 2 years later (2375 to 2377); Voyager gets home through the transwarp conduit, only to be greeted by Dominion occupation forces. And after all their years of struggle and fighting against the Borg, Voyager gets done in by the Jem'Hadar.

Wouldn't the Federation have told Voyager that they were losing?

The Feds contacted oyager on a monthly basis during the 6th season; the Dominion War, from VGR's perspective, ended also during the 5th season. So, Janeway would have never known what was coming.
