RahXephon--Any good?

Post by The Kernel »

I bought the first disc of RahXephon the other day and was pretty impressed by what I've seen so far. I want to pick up the rest of the series but since anime is so expensive these days I've had to cut back my purchases somewhat. What I want to know is, does this series stay consistantly good and is it worth purchasing?

The anime club on my campus showed it last year. I didn't watch it consistently enough to get an exact feel for the series, but I'm thinking that if you liked the first disk you'll enjoy the rest of the series.

Yes. It delivers exactly what the first DVD promises.

They may have claymores and Dragons, but we have Bolos and Ogres.

I've heard two sides to it... Some people say it's just a cheesy Evangelion knock-off, while others say that it's a good anime. I haven't actually seen it, but from what I've read about the plot, I'd have to agree with the first assessment, although that doesn't necessarily mean it's not worth watching.

Most of the people I have talked to about it have said that it is definately not just an NGE knockoff, but they were divided as to how good it was.

Me? I'm saving my money for the second Big O collection and the next Haibane Renmei DVD. Can't go wrong there. :D

I'll admit it is similar to eva to the extent that its a show about an introspective guy thrust into the role of piloting a giant robot, with a kind of immanization of the eschaton at the end...but you could say the same thing of Nadesico as well. Heck, you might as well say that everything is a ripoff of Voltron.

Thats really the sum of the similarities, though. Ayato is an adult, while Shinji is still a child, and thus Ayato isn't nearly as whiney. In fact, Eva can be described as one big disfunctional family falling apart, while Rah Xephon only has the occasional dysfunctional individual. Rah Xephon isn't really based in any set symbology the way Eva is influenced by the Christianity, and the storyline is generally more complex but also better explained. Oh, and I'm sure you already noticed the use of music and visual symbolism.

Indeed, it was the visual work which made me like the series as much as I did after the first few episodes. Problem is, a series needs to have a tight plot to go with the visuals (which is exactly why I didn't like End of Evangelion) so I just wanted to check that the plot actually delivers on a lot of what is set up at the beginning. From what people are saying here, it does and I intend to purchase the second disc tonight.

I've watched up to episode 9, and I have to say that I waS impressed by it. It's sad though, it'll always be compared to Evangelion and thought of as an Eva clone. But in my opinion, it's just as good and may be even better than Eva.

The Jewish and Christian symbols and icon in Eva serve as plot devices, not as storyline influences.
