How come....

Post by TurboPhaser »

Photon Torpedoes or the like don't explode when they hit shields?

Most prominent examples come from VOY: 'Equinox'.
I first thought that the explosion is simply absorbed into the shields, but this does not seem right for some reason.

All i've ever seen them do is slam into the shields and dissipate like an energy weapon.......

Any theories?
Voyager summed up in 1 quote:

Neelix: These people dont appreciate what they have! This ship is the match of anything in a hundred lightyears, yet what do they do with it?
(fake voice) Oh, well lets go find some space anomaly today that'll rip it apart!

Maybe they're directional weapons all the energy is focused into the sheild?

It's not universally the case. We saw explosions after the photon torpedo impacts on the Husnock ship in TNG "Survivors".

We also saw nice sized explosions when they hit the Borg cube in "Q Who?"

Canon answer to the dillema: Haven't a clue

Real answer: They don't have the FX budget to put in convincing explosions for every torpedo that is fired

Probably upgrades in torpedo technology. The Torpedoes used in 'Q-Who' for example caused large explosions against the Cubes hul. TheTorpedoes in Best Of Both Worlds on the other hand simply disipated on the hulls surface. Probably that they upgraded their torpedo technology so that the energy was directed into the shields, rather then being wasted in a spherical explosion.
