Most Disturbing/Depressing Anime

Post by Symmetry »

As opposed to twisted. I've got some contenders here:

The End of Evangelion: The cannonical favorite, with some imagery that is probably doing horrible things to my subconcious.

Now and Then, Here and There: Inspired by child soldiers, an excellent monograph on the nature of cruelty.

Alien 9: Puberty, borderline child abuse, suicide etc wrapped in a sugary coating. Be warned that the main character is more depressed than Shinji.

And my new favorite in this catagory:

Narutaro: NaT,HaT crossed with Lord of the Flies crossed with Pokemon. Starts out sweet and inocent, but by episode three you know this is dangerous stuff. The 13 episodes made so far don't explain enough.
SDN Rangers: Gunnery Officer

They may have claymores and Dragons, but we have Bolos and Ogres.

Grave of the Fireflies. I came in at the middle of it and wanted to kill myself by the end. Truly sad movie it is...

Evangelion is perhaps the most disturbing mentally. Because of it and A Clockwork Orange, I hear screams in the back of my head when I hear the glorious 9th of Ludwig Van.
Grave of the fireflies is truly depressing though. It makes you feel bad about being human, and that i hard to do.
Simply most disturbing thought, would go to some of the Hentai out there. Some is disturbing in this comical, nonsexual way that no pornography should be allowed.

Although I agree with Evangelion and Grave of the Fireflies as being the most twisted and depressing, I'm going to throw in Serial Experiments Lain. This is one of my favorites, but it certainly was twisted. It also gets awfully depressing near the end.

EoE is just depressing because a psychotic 15 yo boy, his disgracefully poor excuse for a father and the unstable clone of his mother get to decide the fate of the human race.
Alien 9: Puberty, borderline child abuse, suicide etc wrapped in a sugary coating. Be warned that the main character is more depressed than Shinji.
In the name of LAIN NO!!

Lain wasn't really depressing, no where near as bad as it was in Evagelion. I mean the ending is at least bittersweet and hopeful.

It's a debate between most anime fans as to whether or not Grave of the Fireflies is more depressing than Jin-Roh, but according to the booklet of information that came with my Jin-Roh DVD set, apparently the most depressing anime movie of all time (and because of that, has not had a foreign release) is Angel Egg. As the author said, "while Grave is about the death of the body, Angel's Egg is about the death of the soul".

A friend of mine let us borrow Cool Devices. Those are some of the most disturbing things I've ever seen. I decided I didn't even want to watch all of them.

For depressing I have to go with X the movie. The very end with the main guy holding his best friend's head made me almost jump out the window. Every single person this guy knew is DEAD! There's very little as depressing as that.

Bible Black...

I find End of Eva to be absolutely beautiful, personally. Occasionally shocking, yes, but I didn't think it was disturbing.

Lain lost everything, her family, her friends and her life. She realized that she had been forced into living a life where she could be a part on NO ONE'S lives. That was depressing.

The bittersweet and hopeful ending was because Lain decided to help the one girl who actually cared about her, but she was still forced to live out her life alone.

Sorry, forgot this...

As for depressing, I have to agree with Grave of the Firefliesp: easily the most heart-breaking film ever made in the history of cinema.

Grave of the Fireflies. The last time I watched it I cried. I don't just mean crying either; I was a blubbering, snot-nosed mess. I'm glad no one saw me.

Don't watch GoTF unless you have something uplifting to watch afterwards. I watched it a few months ago and was so depressed I had to go out and buy Spirited Away to cheer up.

Well, the obvious answer is Grave of the Fireflies, of course. I'm going to throw another one out there; Voices of a Distant Star. It didn't really depress me personally, but I know it really gets to some of my friends by the end.

It was a bit depressing, but I didn't find it anywere near as disturbing as the ones I mentioned. Except for EoE, the stuff in the ones I mentioned is basically happening to other poeple as we speak, except NaT, HaT is happening in various third world countries, and the degree of screwed upedness in the other two is more the exception than the rule.

Unfortunatly I haven't seen Angel's Egg or Grave of the Fireflies (mooziwake arimasen). The stuff that happened in Jin-Roh did really suck for the main character, but at least it happened over an issue all concerend considered important.

But it was such a sweet sadness, not disturbing in the least.

So, showing this to a friend that just got dumped by his girlfriend is a definite no-no?

Exactly, though sometimes watching something sad helps if you're already in a sort of depression. Maybe you could find something only a little sad, and non-romantic... Lain?
