Although the name "Military Assault Command Operations" seems an affront to all self-respecting military nomenclature, it turns out that the name may not be so outlandish after all.
According to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, General Jones, the current SACEUR, announced on 1 September 2003 that considerable changes to the military structure of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation are being undertaken, with the former Allied Command Europe (ACE) being reorganised and renamed Allied Command Operations (ACO), whose AOR includes that of the disestablished SACLANT; in SACLANT's place is the new Allied Command Transformation (ACT).
So, if the odious MACO name is to be interpreted along similar lines, it actually has some measure of meaning, and would furthermore imply that there is a second headquarters (e.g., Military Command Doctrinal/Operational Nourishment And Logistical Development Support) devoted to CONOPS and development. Messrs. Berman and Braga are saved by serendipity, no doubt.
