Start fresh.

New ship, new crew. Starfleet worked out the bugs and now has a working, dependable transwarp/quantum slipstream drive and is sent to explore the deep beta quadrant, where they encounter...

...well, we'll all find out.

Frankly, Paramount is not willing to spend the money on a budget worthy of a Trek film, plus I beleive the franchise is just been run into the ground. The reason why TNG and the TOS movies seemed so fresh and new was because the franchise had been dormant for 10 years before TMP started up. Trek has been canabilizng from itself for plots and the like and we can all see how ridiculous its getting. Let it go to sleep for awhile, let B&B get into a horrible rice picking machine accident and bring some fresh blood in for a new generation of Trek.

It really needs a rest right now, the creative well has run dry.

That's not even the problem; if Star Trek had had competent production staff for the past several years, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

But that's the biggest IF since... well, you get the idea.

The problem is that the current well was never really full to begin with. Star Trek doesn't necessarily need more time (although that may help), it just plain needs new blood. Actual science-fiction writers might help. But the point is, Star Trek could sit untouched for 40 years, and if they unearth it only to hire back Berman and Braga, it'll still be shit because they're fucking worthless as sci-fi producers.

There was an idea a few years back for a new series, but the basic idea was eventully adapted to become Andromeda. It was set in the 2900's. It was to be set after the Vulcans rejected the teachings of Surek and became violent. Earth is gone and the Klingons are being beaten badly. The Romulans have been wipped out, along with most of the other races. A ship form the 25th Century comes out of a temporal distortion and discovers the aftermath. They try to form a makeshift government and are trying to rebuild the Federation. There was an article about it right before Enterprise came out and it might still exist. It was either at Roddenberry's site or ST.com, but I haven't checked there in a while.

The concept is being applied elsewhere, but this idea is better than what is currently out there.

Though a movie dealing with Riker's new command would be okay.

No, but all of it's warm and fuzzy preachyness, it made Paramount boatloads of money. TVH was the most succesfull Trek movie at the box office IIRC.

It's probably the most popular Star Trek production out there; it's not too hard to find someone who said "I saw the one with the whales in it."

Sulu would've been a better Captain then Kirk and probably get laid more too. Or have Chekov turn from a happy face young Russian Ensign to an evil admiral that eventually tries to take over the Federation. This is all fanfic wanking though so don't mind me.

If there is another Star Trek movie, more then likely, it will be with the 'Enterprise crew' (as sad as that might be) and it will either be about the Romulan War, or the founding of the Federation
