i imagine a good many trekkies think that theyre really working turbolifts.

Conventions are like a diseased organ that needs to be removed form the body. Seriously, they do freak me out and I don't understand how some people could take a TV show to heart like that.

I hardly think Star Trek is unique in this endeavour; see anime conventions for truly frightening behavior (and dress).
