Designer of the Enterprise dies

Post by Ace Pace »

the art director of the TOS and the creator of the enterprise has passed away

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3086645.stm
Walter "Matt" Jefferies, the art director who designed the original Enterprise vessel for the first Star Trek series has died, the official website of the sci-fi series has announced.
His design of the NCC-1701, as it was designated in the first series, has become one of the most iconic images of 1960s television.

The exact cause of his death is not known but Jefferies had been battling cancer.

The website reported that he had recently been given the all-clear by doctors.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ann.

A very sad day today, the man was almost a instrumental as Roddenberry in the creation of Trek. His designs gave shape to the Enterprise and forever influenced starship designs in all other series. He also designed the BoP and Klingon D-7.

You mean some poor sod is actually responsible for designing all the bland grey garbage in TOS?

He designed just about everything that wasn't a costume or prop.
The revolution is successful, but survival depends on drastic measures. Your continued existence represents a threat to the well-being of society. Your lives means slow death to the more valued members of the colony. Therefore I have no alternative but to sentence you to death. Your execution is so ordered.

Sad news.

Like them or hate them, you got to admit that his designs were pretty revolutionary in the 60s.

The "bland gray garbage" as you so delicately put it, was a deliberate design decision. Jefferies thought that in the future, spacecraft would be designed so all maintenence could be done from inside the ship, rather than by sending out guys in pressure suits. The hulls of those ships are largely featureless because all the equipment is on the inside.

I'm sure, much like the modern military ships which have most minor repairs done from inside, however even modern naval ships look different. The original Enterprise was matte grey, endless matt grey, with a bit of red and gold here and there.

Yeah, because back then Star Trek sure was rolling in money. Not like they ever had to scrimp or anything.

What the hell is wrong with you? Can't some people keep their constant 'Lets trash Trek' attitude in check? Especially in this thread.

You disgust me, and you should be ashamed.

Anyway, this is a sad day, the original Enterprise is beautiful, and will always be a classic.

He did a great job considering what the budget must of been. Even if he had a million bucks for the model, I wouldnt want it any different.

If you insult someone's life work, you pretty much insult the person... Ever think of that, asshole? :finger:

Your not just insulting his life work, but also many of our childhood memories. Despite being young, my first and best memories of Star Trek are of Kirk and his Enterprise. When you insult that ship, you insult all of us who grew up loving the ship and its crew.

You keep thinking that I'm insulting him. Seems to be a tendency around here to exxagerate one someone said and blow it way out or proportion.

*edit* allow me to rephrase that. I was expressing my shock at the fact that they needed someone dedicated to making those bland gray sets, i wasnt taking potshots. idiots.

If you remember 50s and 60s sci-fi most spaceship looked molded from one big block.
