Time Critical Computer Question!

Post by RogueIce »

Please answer this ASAP!

My Norton Antivirus thing just popped up, saying my Master Boot Record has changed. It said a cause may be because I did something to do it, like upgrade to Windows 98, or because an unknown virus got in there.. Well, I did (sorta - I didn't do it, but I already had Win98. The CD says nothing about an update, but the thing got installed anyway). However, this was several days ago...and this is the first time I have ever seen this message.

So, what should I do? Let the thing save, restore it from default, or do nothing and run a viruscheck that'd take a long-ass time to do? Anyone know? :?

So obviously you have a virus.

Scan your system. If there are any viruses, quarantine them.

Scan your machine now for viruses and update your definitions ASAP.

You can use the command "FDISK /MBR" to rewrite it if you must as well.

Damn. That's gonna take a long time. I hope it's better at finding them than it is at detecting the things going in in the first place. Ah well. I guess I gotta go offline for this if I want it done in a reasonable time (and to make sure nothing else pops in...good ol' disconnectable phone line).

I did it and it found...nothing. Absolutely nothing.

*sigh* What's up with that notice then? Any ideas? :?

You could try The Cleaner. Don't have a link on hand unfortunately, if you don't have it.

NAV might have just detected your install's MBR change. If in doubt, copy FDISK to a bootdisk and do the "FDISK /MBR" command.
