It just a matter of what you want to do...
In White Wolf World Of Darkness, Technology is as good as magic and can replace it.
But take the One ring problem for example...
A Magic rule say it can be only destroyed in one particular place.
A Scientific rules say things can be destroyed by other stuff able to cause more destruction than a vulcano.
That was basically the topic...
But it simple; Either the magical rule wont be broken or the scientific rules wont be. The whole debate happened because there is no way to measure which of those would be broken.
Its the same here, if you are going to bring up D&D magic up, you will have to decide also...It works that way good because they never faced technology or would work anyway and there goes.
I think its a sittuation to each with his own...

well, a nitpick is good as anyother and that i what i mean by "replace it" since it paradigm replaced the previous one to work.Well Igot, just to nit-pick. Science in the WoD is a form of magic. Tech only works becuase of a belief in it, partly because of tecchnocracy brainwashing.

The culture can beat any non-extra-universal non-god. They just sit a few light hours away and wait for the targets defenses to drop (no mage can remain invulnerable to all attacks 24/7) then kill them. If it's something that's immune to everything except magic, just transport it into hyperspace, and without grid engines it won't be able to move, so it'll be stuck their forever or until it dies.

That's not going to work if they don't even know that the Culture exists. And they never will, since they'll never get anywhere near them, and even if they have spells long enough ranged to detect the Culture, they'd never think to look for them as long as they were subtle enough (which they are).Thunderfire wrote:Some Powers/Spells have an unlimited range. Ancient Curse targeted at the culture is a good example.

It is the policy of Games Workshop that Warhammer takes place on a planet in the 40K galaxy. The Slann were the enemies of the Necrons, note the word were. The culture could destroy the planet. Hell they could simply cut off warp space and reneder all the magical powers useless, given enough time.THe Yosemite Bear wrote:Alternately I can use Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, or Elric to really sic some nasty forces of Chaos or Order on Culture.

Not the way magic works in Netheril. All the level-based caps are off in that time period. And it will work if you center the effect on the center of the Spelljammer. Even if that application didn't work, enchanting heavy magic with it and painting the hull will work. There's a reason why the only thing to ever kill off the Netherese was their own magic.Dead on Arrival wrote:Prismatic Sphere is immobile and too small to surround a Spelljammer...

Ooh, I did forget about Heavy Magic didn't I? A misapplication by Karsus turned Wulgreth into a lich, so that is some nifty stuff. However, Karsus was the only one with any practical knowledge of its use. Even more powerful than the Empire of Netheril (in its entirety, Karsus was the exception) is ancient Elven High Magic and the works of the Creator Race (precursor race of lizardfolk/saurian races) who wrote the human-discovered Nether Scrolls which were the basis of the Netherese magic.

Very true. Though Heavy Magic was in rather large use outside of Karsus(I'm still amused that the stupid bastard made a feedback loop.), this is largely just guesswork. I know one arcanist used walls coated with Prismatic Wall as a nigh-on-impenetrable defense...Dead on Arrival wrote:Ooh, I did forget about Heavy Magic didn't I? And yes. I fear the Creator Race. The only thing I fear more than them is Moander's Avatar. And possibly, POSSIBLY, the Tarrasque.

Could have sworn only Karsus had access, but it has been awhile since I read the books. They are free download from Wizards, so I have no excuse not to now.
PS: The Tarrasque is a wuss, just cast Fly and the Shapechange into a giant block of lead and squish the poor thing... :p

With Shapechange you could turn yourself into a 200 ft in diameter plate of Lead, there is no way the Tarrasque could catch it.
Of course, this wouldn't actually kill the Tarrasque...as he would begin to regenerate from his flattened state the instant after impact.

The tangible beats the intangible any day of the week…
Anyway, sufficiently advanced technology is magic for all intents and purposes, and that’s what I go by for debates. Good enough tech beats magic; you don't need magic to beat magic.

I agree. Any group which can slay a deity and immediately replace the slain with one of their own, through technology, is a match for the Empire of Netheril.Sea Skimmer wrote:The tangible beats the intangible any day of the week…
