It might be a good idea, Phong, to gather up all the OOBs and treaty lists and put them in a sticky for instant reference.

Jihad details will be forthcoming... But it is not yet time. No - not yet. Zathras not ready yet. Zathras never ready, Zathras always busy. Always busy looking after things. Yes, yes. Zathras busy now. Zathras very busy. But Zathras be back soon and be ready to give fleet details. But first Zathras has to build fleet. Zathras ever so busy. Please excuse Zathras now.

The New Roman Empire would appear to be having economic difficulties. By simply accepting a very generous offer from ATJ Catering Services we can halve the costs of supplying your vessels with food. I am sure that the economically minded Romans would not discard such a potentially lucrative agreement.

Gee, that'd be nice, do you have anything for their moral and diplomatic woes? Too bad the Free Republics are no longer trading with em, we have some mighty fine Recreational Pharmaceuticals garaunteed to make their troubles just melt away...

I remind all that sudden actions without prior buildup (covert or overt) within the Story Thread is subject to moderatoral override. I also remind all that covert diplomacy and such is not as easily intercepted as some may wish it to be.

Constant interception and decryption of diplomatic mail, to speak, is powergaming.

Can we use you like a GM? Say, for instance, that I decide to launch an attack against the People's Interplanetary Republic (just an example.) I could then PM you saying that my fleets were on their way, and I would be openly declaring war half an hour before the first fleet translated out of hyperspace... So that you'd know that my move was premeditated, not some assinine attempt to pull my balls out of the fire in some quick move?

Usually there's something to show that war is going to come out (at which point you can attack). Political decisios of this magnitude do not happen in a vacuum!

Yes, there has to be some buildup. The attack on Pearl Harbor, the most infamous surprise attack of the 20th century, was preceeded by a long diplomatic struggle.

Indeed. For example, in the ASVS STGOD2, a good number of players were displeased at Marina's power and sought to remove her from power. They thus secreted away an attack plan behind everyone's backs and struck without warning or buildup.

That doesn't happen in real politics! It's utterly ridiculous.

Of course, such an action is just plain sucky. Don't worry- I won't be randomly declaring war on powers I don't like. If relations are near the breaking point, you'll all know.

Is it alright to start phasing out dependance on homeworlds? The Minmatar are currently dependand on Earth holdings for scientific research and Kaz'morden (alien planet with similar geopolitical climate to Earth) holdings for it's industrial base.

I'd like to gradually phase out dependance on them in favor of self sufficient colonies.

Moving scientific research likely wouldn't take a fraction of the effort of displacing or replicating hundreds of years of industrial build up.

I'm aware of that, that's why I'm asking Phong before I start the process.

Well the year was already established as 2800, so how about the start date is January 1st 2800? As for time progression, I'll leave that to people with more experience.

I think we should just play time management by ear, like it's done on ASVS.

Proper real time with a fixed compression ratio doesn't work because events such as negotiations can drag out over the actual posts for several weeks where as only a few minutes will pass in the actual STGOD universe. A good idea is to have STGOD time determined by events rather then by real time.

Basically, if there's a major war, or some other major undertaking, when it's finished we'll just say "ok, that took several months" or "several years" depending on the intensity.

Can somebody draw up a rough map of the "playing field"? It would be nice to know roughly who's where at a glance, and hence be able to set out strategic plans more accurately.

For whoever wants to draw up the map, for reference the Republic of Tho'a-hal (sphere of influence being roughly 15 light years radius) should be on the edge or just outside of human colonial expansion.

A map doesn't seem all that necessary now, with the vast majority of space and systems unclaimed. Though it would be nice.

I'll think about it, but I still have my allies in the League of Princely States, and the unaffliated powers.

Allies?
Article VII. In time of War between a non-League State and a League State, the members of the League shall commit to maintain a friendly neutrality towards the League State involved in the conflict, and shall not exceed the boundaries of customary law, nor allow their nationals to do so, in dealing with the non-League State.
A mighty responce they promise in times of war
