World after humanity cartoons

Post by FaxModem1 »

I found these today, and thought I would share them, as they are both beautiful and haunting.

1939's Peace on Earth

1984's There will fall soft rains.(In Russian with English subtitles)
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x38uy2 ... shortfilms

And finally, a 1955 update of Peace on Earth, called Good Will to Men

I rather liked them. All of them showings of the world after humanity has destroyed itself.

And the little animals of the fields did crawl upon the battlefields of men, eating the corpses and brains. Through this act they ascended to sentience and literacy. The owls, coming upon a copy of the bible, took up residency in the Holy See, and did rise as the First Estate (clergy), whilst the hawks, foxes, serpents and other predators built great fortresses upon the land and lorded over herbivores as the Second Estate (nobility). Each of these god-anointed classes taxed the herbivores 10% of their children in exchange for protection and otherwise being left unmolested, with the herbivores bound eternally by the dictum "thou shalt not kill"

Speaking of "There Will Come Soft Rains":

I actually teared up a bit when I first ran into this in the game.
"I'm just reading through your formspring here, and your responses to many questions seem to indicate that you are ready and willing to sacrifice realism/believability for the sake of (sometimes) marginal increases in gameplay quality. Why is this?"

In case anyone wants to read the poem that the Ray Bradbury story was based on:

There Will Come Soft Rains
by Sara Teasdale

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;

Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

More than that. There have been many good cartoon threads happening in testing lately. We need a mod to go to the art section and make some sort of cool unique cartoon megathread.
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.

You win. There, I have said it.

Now there is only one thing left to do. Let us see if I can sum up the strength needed to end things once and for all.

I think this commercial from the Sci-fi channel, and made by David Lynch of all people, counts.

A youtube link of When the Wind Goes, as the audio starts getting wonky on part 4 or 5 the Daily Motion links.

BTW, this movie is horrific, it's like watching the parents from Calvin and Hobbes dying of Radiation poisoning.

Thank you!

And yes, the only thought that kept running through my head as I watched the latter parts of the movie was "thank grud I didn't see this as a kid." I would have been traumatized for life.

I mean, I've seen it well into my 20s and I STILL was depressed for days after.

Have a very nice day.

I read up on the author, and finding out that he used his these characters in a previous work and decided to use them for this because they were popular just seems mean spirited. Then again, if they weren't so lovable, the message wouldn't be as poignant.

Raymond Briggs the creator of The Snowman and Father Christmas goes on Holiday brings you a cheery tale of slow lingering death in post nuclear holocaust England.
Read it when I was a kid.
So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.

I also read it when I was a kid. It took me a few years to realise why they were dying, but it always got too me..

When the wind blows always hit me hard I was in tears in the school library when I first read it, the characters looked and acted so much like my grand parents and then they die slowly and painfully without even understanding what was happending. It didn't help that my grand father had been diagnosed with Altzimers a bit before then.

The early cut aways to a distant ocean, and a distant sky were powerful as well, the weapons just seemed so huge and impersonal compaired to the main characters.
