Politics Forum Policy (update 10.10.10)

Post by Dalton »

Yes, we now have a politics forum. I would like to kick things off with a small policy post, even though no moderators have been announced yet. This is just some preemptive ground rules I'm sure my fellow mods will agree with...

Flamewars
THIS FORUM IS A FIREPIT.
This is the basic truth. This forum now will probably see more flamewars and unpleasantness than OT and HOS combined. We have smoke-jumpers and C-130s full of water standing by on the runway. So, TRY at least keep it civil PLEASE.

That's it for now.

One addendum: please try not to hold grudges. If you have a huge flamewar with someone and he says something perfectly reasonable in some other thread, LET GO OF YOUR ANGER and try to talk with him in the other thread as if he's a whole new person, dealing with whatever he or she just said anew.

I have noticed that some people carry around a "mad-on" for certain people and won't let that person get over it. It's a natural and perfectly understandable impulse, and this forum will bring it out of people by the nature of the subject matter. However, it can be rather annoying to see someone post something which, on its own merits, seems perfectly reasonable, only to have someone else jump into the thread ranting about what the person posted in some other thread, or about some personal vendetta which has been building for some time.

If someone says something stupid, then by all means, let him have it. But if someone said something stupid last week, do not jump all over him if he says something reasonable today.

I was appointed mod to this forum on October 5th, 2010.

As part of a forum cleanup, the following things happened today:

The Poppy thread was moved to OT as it was neither News nor Politics.
The Refuge from political correctness thread was changed from a sticky to a standard topic. We'll see if it is noteworthy enough to survive on its own.
The Official List of all obvious Right-wing double standards was moved to famous threads for safekeeping. It received too few views in total.
The Political terminology thread was moved to debating helped. It's quality had gone downhill after the basics had been covered.
The Political Resources and the news sites thread have been merged and the thread renamed. The topics were very similar and it is better to condense such resources in one location anyway.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood
