Hyperspace Pioneering

Post by Talon Karrde »

I know little on the topic of Hyperspace pioneering. My question is this: We know that to jump into hyperspace you have to make calculations so as not to run through a rotation star or planet. So how then did the charts and calculations first come about for hyperspace routes? Surely not trial and error! Perhaps you can enlighten me :D

::Sigh:: I meant to say rotating star or planet. Not "rotation star or planet" which makes absolutely no sense.

Trial and error. :D

Early hyperspace navigators could "read" that weird tunnel effect and detect masses etc. Moreso if they had some Force sensativity.

New hyperspace routes were paid for hansomly and rightfully so. After a few telescope readings and some calcs, all you could do was push down the levers and hope you didn't hit something.

The lack of editing is to prevent people like DarkStar from flaming, then editing. To answer your question, I remember before the Hyperspace War at the dawn of the Republic, there was this couple, probably Corellian, who simply punched in a random vector and jumped into hyperspace. If you survive the journey, you'll have found something. Also, hyperdrive equipped probes come in handy. Send out a fleet of the things, and you're bound to found at least one safe route to a nearby planet. Also, just use telescopes to find nearby planets, then go there and repeat.

Both answers seem quite reasonable and probably true. As for DarkStar, if he constantly flames why not ban him and not punish everyone else? I'm suffering from Massive Typo Syndrome! :D

We are thinking about banning DarkStar, but I don't think we should. Darth Wong has promised to crush him on his Hate Mail page, as soon as he has a spare moment.

The source site for this Forum is http://www.stardestroyer.net, which is primarily composed of his ST vs SW site, his creationism rants, and his homepage. He recieves a sizable quantity of hatemail from Trekkies, so he places it on his webpages so we can all see how he crushes them.

Hmm..... Thats a tough one. I think the Hyperspace probes are the most likely of how hyperspace was mapped out.

In addition to the mentioned blind jump mapping and probe use, the SW galaxy likely had some sort of slower FTL drive before Hyperdrives, allowing for large areas to already be mapped.

The Hyperdrive united the Galaxy, but that does not mean it was the first FTL drive. Something like Trek Warp would allow for huge areas, if not the whole galaxy to be charted in a couple thousand years, while still not making galactic travel even remotely practical and keeping everything devided.

Uhm.. It's actually quite simple. You take a telescope and look up in the sky and you find the stars and how far away they are then map them. Then you point the ship where the stars arent, and press go. :)

As for the further unknown stars, you just creep outward mapping as you go.

Yeah, but your information is traveling at the speed of light. IOW: time delay. Also, black holes that aren't orbiting close enough to a star to pull it apart will not be seen. Also, there's brown dwarf stars that are several times the mass of Jupiter that's just on the edge of having enough mass to ignite nuclear fusion that cannot be seen very easily. And from what I've seen of star populations, the less massive stars are the most numerous. So, it's not unreasonable to assume brown dwarf stars make up a sizable population in the galaxy, enough to provide a navigational hazard.

I'd doubt it. Otherwise, they'd use warp-capable ships to travel through unknown hyperdrive routes. Once the route was clear, then hyperdrive would be used. But that wasn't the case in the pre-Republic days.

I was thinking they used some unmanned scout to map out reigons, and then sent people out for further observations. Perhaps on the planet the hyperdeive was discovered, they were making observations.

SW has FTL telescopes (ref. EGWT, ESB). However, this does not appear to be the method that they used for mapping the Unknown Regions. It appears more likely that Thrawn used gravitational scans on his conquest of those areas. Remember that they were able to map the entire area in less than a decade, AND conquer it while they were going. Their resources were also more limited than those of the Empire at large. Clearly mapping is not so much of an issue. In addition, the YV are having NO trouble mapping the Galaxy, even though Traitor made it quite clear that they use some kind of hyperspace technology, and Rebel Stand and Rebel Dream both implied the same. The Hapes Cluster was no navigational hazard, nor was the Galaxy at large to ships from Hapes. This demonstrates that mapping is both very easy and very quick, requiring essentially no time and very few resources.

Interestingly, EGD indicates that there are still prospectors going to planets with droids in an effort to find new resources or things of interest. These explorations are carried out by droids, which are dropped off in-system by a larger, hyperspace capable ship. I think that microjumps are unnecessary to map space, and so telescopes or similar scanners is the best explanation we have come up with so far. Note that this does not take very long, nor does it require significant resources or dedicated systems.
