Of course, I did miss the 50s by twenty years, but the innovation in aircraft design, the variety, the excitement about aviation and space that seemed to affect all society... It must have been a wonderful time to be a plane buff.

I think the wingshape might have had something to do with the control surfaces, they used to have severe bother getting aircraft to respond at high sub-sonic speeds so perhaps they thought bigger was better. Check the size and position of the ailerons on that thing, they're huge!
