I'm pretty sure they did burn inverted crosses. If not, then I apologize for mixing it up.
An inverted cross wasn't a symbol of the occult until recently though... Hell, even the Pope has it on his chair.

Wasn't St. Peter crucified on an inverted cross?? I've heard the inverted cross being described as a "Cross of Petrus."
