I agree with Bounty's point. Eliminate from on high and start enforcing stringent policy.
Far too much dumb shit pointless shit, such as Zor's evolution and nation's article. This particular wiki is about the board and the Star Trek and Star Wars versus debate. Not ever dumb fucking think that flits into the minds of the loser virgin population.

Honestly, I say we ask Mike about this one. Just zap the useless bastard and be done with it.Colonel Olrik wrote:Zor posted dozens of pages, and all of them are bullshit. Embarassing and dangerous bullshit, his page about Evolution for example is nearly enough to convert me into embracing YEC.
Can he just be accidentally banned from both the forum and the Wiki for this?

Eh? You really expected people to guess an evolution article was going to be about Trek? And can people please keep on topic. I was expecting a blasting of that salamander episode when I typed in evolution, not a poorly written article with mistakes.
Next time you want to keep an article on your subject, leave a note in the talk page. People aren't psychic.
That works when you have either a huge pool of editors (to make sure the competent ones outnumber the bad ones) or extremely tight moderation. Currently, the wiki has neither of those, so crap articles stay up.I think the point of a wiki is self-policing. Peer pressure works in real life, so let's see what dicks think when their articles are mercilessly edited to oblivion, or even voted for deletion and removed.
These are basic issues with the concept of a wiki. Bigger wikies get around it by having loads of members to double-check articles, but unless that happens here, the quality won't go up.

What are you talking about? It's an Imperial wiki and I expected something about Star Trek or Star Wars, not something random that comes out of somebody's head. When I key in evolution in a specialist wiki related to Star Trek and Star Wars I expect certain things to be discussed, such as the salamander episode or the Voth or The Force. I didn't even make the evolution page so I don't know what you're talking about.Bounty wrote:Eh? You really expected people to guess an evolution article was going to be about Trek?

Isn't everybody an editor? Are you saying everybody is a Zor?That works when you have either a huge pool of editors (to make sure the competent ones outnumber the bad ones) or extremely tight moderation. Currently, the wiki has neither of those, so crap articles stay up.

Having one man submit an article to Mike and having Mike vet it is no guarantee of a successful wiki contributor. It's a chicken and the egg problem. I am sure Mike did not sign up for a greater workload since he barely updates his main page. So either the wiki dies on its own feet and we admit the format is useless, or it lives and we excise infections on our own. That is just my opinion though, but there will be many many more Zors. This board has thousands of members.

Considering the status of evolution on the board, you really didn't expect someone would discuss evolution from a real world POV?When I key in evolution in a specialist wiki related to Star Trek and Star Wars I expect certain things to be discussed, such as the salamander episode or the Voth or The Force.
No, everyone who hits that "edit" button could be a Zor. That's the problem. In a big wiki, the Zor's are overshouted by the Ted C's. In this wiki, Ted C can't fix everything Zor breaks quickly or efficiently enough.Isn't everybody an editor? Are you saying everybody is a Zor?
Who said anything about Mike vetting everything? I'm saying you'd keep the wiki system but don't allow anyone to sign up until they prove they have the skills to contribute. The current mods can handle this and every person vetted decreases the workload.I am sure Mike did not sign up for a greater workload since he barely updates his main page.
And about three of them are contributing. This board has thousands of members.

In regards to the poor articles, I created the Cleanup template. Feel free to apply it to any pages that need to be fixed. (And to improve the template if necessary.)
Just add the following at the top of the article:
Or whatever reason is appropriate.
Any page the Cleanup template is used on will appear in the Articles Needing Cleanup category, so they can easily be found.
If the article simply needs more information, use the {{Stub}} template instead (usually at the bottom of the article).

It automatically appears after 4 or more headings and subheadings are inserted into the article. The documentation describes how to force it to appear with less (or to do other tricks with it).Bounty wrote:On the tech side, how do you make you headings automatically show up in a Contents menu? On the other points, I guess you're right. Evolution can be discussed from a scientific point of view, but I don't think very many people have the qualifications to discuss it. I would trust probably CaptainChewbacca and that's it. No point creating another Mike shrine either: if people want Mike's analysis the creationism site is the place.
I don't really know how a wiki selective editing works, would people e-mail an article to an editor? That would create long wait times and lag, as Stark has a life and so does Sheppared. I certainly do not want to be chained to my computer watching the wiki for vandalism though, so I can see how a vetting could make editor life easier. I don't even want to be an editor or an admin: it sounds like a fucking nightmare job, and all I want to do is come home some days and throw up a page on some interesting Trek or Wars related topic on my free time, not watch for destruction.
At the very least the main scientific disciplines: chemistry, biology, physics...

Someone needs to create an "expert" tag the same as Mad's "cleanup" tag. The "expert" tag in this wiki should be a lot more specific than a general expert, to make it clear we're looking for specific experts and not experts in Trek or Wars since everybody's that. Maybe a canon expert, or a physics expert, or a chemistry expert etc. Not sure how many of the physical sciences are necessary, but the main ones biology chemistry physics mechanical engineering computer science ballistics military science mathematics are all highly specialized needs for the wiki's purpose (good luck finding them though but hopefully some of the pool of talent in SDN eventually wakes up.)Mad wrote:In regards to the poor articles, I created the Cleanup template.

No. If you're signed up to the wiki, you would be able to edit whatever you want, just like it works right now. But before you can sign up, you need to prove you can write an article up to a certain standard. It would be a one-time test. I'm not sure how practical it is myself.I don't really know how a wiki selective editing works, would people e-mail an article to an editor?
Then you might as well draft those specialists, have them write the articles and lock them. Besides, how are you going to prove you're a specialist? It might work for long-time members, but not for new signups.biology chemistry physics mechanical engineering computer science ballistics military science mathematics

Well you can't really prove you're a specialist. It would just be a note for a specialist to come in and help if the author of an article wanted, like in other wikis.
How are you scaling the Jem'Hadar bugs? Are those figures for the size of them your personal scaling or just ripped from somewhere?
As an aside, the transporter article fucking blows. Is that the best you got SDN? I was expecting discussion on: souls, different types of transporter theories such as the entanglement theory versus the data storage theory, conflicting theories because one single transporter theory cannot explain transporters in all of Trek, tactical use of transporters, power use of transporters (a simple calculation of the gravitational potential energy of a 185 lbs. man!), and so on. Instead it gives this quantum level technobabble, which we know isn't true because if transporters could manipulate matter at that level they could dick around with the fundamental forces and have insane powers.

Nitpick, Chewie is a geologist, not a biologist. Biologists would be mayabird.brianeyci wrote:On the other points, I guess you're right. Also brian, prooding SD.net to do something on the wiki would be better served by asking the parties that would be best qualified.
Sure, Connor, Publius, Degan and Stravo can lend their abilities, but a well concieved article not only takes time, but a great deal of effort. Also there is the ever looming spectre of some yabbering jackass cocking it up because they disagree with something. Thus making the effort even seem more unwanted to put forward.
So it will take time and shit load of pruning to achieve a desired result. We can start the pruning now, and then see who puts forward a good effort on said subjects.

I'm actually ambivalent on Zor.
1.) He's Trying.
2.) He isn't cut and pasting
3.) He is useful for generating stubs; which we can fill out later.
4.) He isn't DEATH.

Gosh, I don't know what I did to get the respect of others as an authority on science, aside from just my actual job. I hope I don't screw it up.

One thing to keep in mind, folks: the wiki has plenty of time to grow.
Rome was not built in a day. There is no need to rush articles onto it just for the sake of making it grow quickly, and if people take their time to make good articles and periodically suppress the spammers, I think it can still eventually become something very useful.
The most important thing is to oppress low-quality articles, particularly those containing copy-and-paste drivel or unsourced/unjustified claims. This will slow down the growth of the wiki, but that is an acceptable price to pay for keeping the signal-to-noise ratio up.

What's the deal on Manus Celer Dei's page in the Board Members category? The entire article is just:

Would someone double check my maths?
I did a rough acceleration page, focusing on the "useful" side of it, rather than the estosteric definitions of what is acceleration, and did a hypothetical computation using 15 metric tons as the combat weight for a TIE Fighter, and a 3,000 G acceleration capability.
