CANTON, Ohio -- There are 490 female students at Timken High School, and 65 are pregnant, according to a recent report in the Canton Repository.
The article reported that some would say that movies, TV, videogames, lazy parents and lax discipline may all be to blame.
School officials are not sure what has caused so many pregnancies, but in response to them, the school is launching a three-prong educational program to address pregnancy, prevention and parenting.
The newspaper also reported that students will face mounting tensions created by unplanned child-rearing responsibilities, causing students to quit school and plan for a GED. This will make it difficult for the Canton City School District to shake its academic watch designation by the state.
According to the Canton Health Department, statistics through July show that 104 of the 586 babies born to Canton residents in Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center had mothers between 11 and 19.
The newspaper reports that the non-Canton rate was 7 percent. Canton was 15 percent.
Over 13% of the female student population is pregnant.
The article reported that some would say that movies, TV, videogames, lazy parents and lax discipline may all be to blame.
Without videogames I daresay there might be even *more* pregnancies.

My theory is it's more like abstinence-only sex ed, possibly coupled with a lack of availability of contraceptives to teens who need them (is there an environment of discouraging or prohibiting sales of condoms and The Pill to minors?).
Somehow I doubt our liberal media will report the facts properly as to the cause of this travesty if it does turn out to be abstinence-only sex ed...
Harm Reduction: Give the kids the tools and knowledge of their proper use. Failing to do so is criminal neglect!
As for the Lazy Parents Excuse™ (if this bit goes on a tangent do not hesitate to split the thread please!), I think it's simply because parents are being forced to work two and three jobs nowadays when in the past one job would suffice. This is due to living expenses outstripping wages due to inflation and lack of payraises (which is caused by greedy investors demanding every last bleeding bit of profit margin possible). More work equals less time for the kids.
I've always considered it an amusing irony that teen pregnancy tends to be higher in areas where the fundies have more control over the school board. But it may not be irony at all; there may be a direct cause and effect situation here.

I suppose that should be enough, even though they are old and on Google. There's plenty of ranting about same-sex marriages and at one point, about evil anal sex.

Come to Abilene my friend...
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

I'd say the sex-education situation in Canton is even more dire than first thought if this is the case.

I don't doubt that abstinence-only sex education probably can account for higher rates of teen pregnancy, but I do doubt that it alone can cause an outlier this large. There has to be some other reason.

You want the reasons? You won't like 'em....
1) Abstinence Only. They don't know to use protection.
2) Conservative parents(A guess from the articles linked to above). Preacher's Daughters may not be the literal word, but there's a reason they tend to go wild in their youth(And then get preggers or high or whatever, and FIND GOD.. And the cycle repeats).
3) Rural Ohio. Seriously. There is fuck all to do out there. So the only entertainment while you're rebelling is screwing like sinners.

There's that phrase again.
I find it consistently grimly hilarious that people deride giving out condoms as pie in the sky reasoning when abstinence only education is far more ideal based and less grounded in effectively combating the problem on hand.
If you end up only having one sexual partner your entire life and it's the person you love, that's great. More often then not however, I find this is not the case.

why am I feeling so happy that my 6th/7th/8th grade sex ed was taught by a "Scililian Lapsed Catholic" (read very liberial one) Mother of two, who showed us everything. Our High School courses were even more in depth, yet we still had a relatively small pregnancy rate, although a fairly high date rape rate (when you consider ours was about half the female student body had claimed to have been raped, or had to physically thwart a rape)

Excuse me if I sound callous here, I apolgize for it in advance.
I dunno, a lot of girls these days after a bad sexual episode go "I was raped!" to rationalize it so they don't feel dirty. There's more then a few where actual rape occured, of this I have little doubt, but it seems far too normal these days for a girl to get plastered, sleep with a guy, then claim rape because she was drunk.
I'm aware of that, now on the other side we did have several people who should quailify as sexual predators. Including one guy who got 3 different freshmen from the local neighboring catholic high school pregnant.

The only time I saw a school approaching this size was the tiny private school I went to for my LD.
It all depends on how the districts are laid out. Philadelphia has something like two dozen zones, each with at least one high school, from which individual high schools draw their students. They usually run closer to 2000 than 1000, but really, 2000 isn't that big (Overbrook High, my student teaching high school, was designed for 5000). Most schools around here seem to shoot for 1500--below that, the fixed costs of operating a school make it uneconomical, above that, the school becomes unmanagable.
