Transwarp or Slipstream breakthrough?

Post by Enola Straight »

Now that Voyager is back for a couple of years with solid experience using both Transwarp and Quantum Slipstream Drives, is Starfleet on the verge of an immediate breakthrough in FTL drive tech?

Absolutely no way to know that. They could be, but they've been fooling with transwarp for 80 years and have never gotten anywhere. The only way we'd know for sure is if a new Trek series or movie set in the post-VOY era was made, and that doesn't seem likely for a long time. My guess is if they did, they WOULD use something faster than warp in order to open up the galaxy more, but this is guessing at artistic motivation, not in-universe speculation.

Voyager came very close to getting the Slipstream technology working. Hell it DID work, but Janeways Bazoon field was so great no-one ever thought of simpyl using it for short 5000 light year jumps every 10 minuites or so.

On a side note, Slipstream (as seen in STVOY "Hope And Fear", STVOY "Timeless") and Borg Transwarp are virtually identical in visual characteristics. Furthermore, Slipstream and Transwarp have similar properties and FTL factors, although from what I've seen Transwarp has the higher FTL factors(with the exception of STVOY "Timeless" IIRC).

Makes sense. The Borg have assimilated Species 116 (where slipstream came from, the low designation suggests early contact), so it's not exactly surprising their transwarp drives would be of similar nature.

The continuation of the 'deflector+saucer+[nacelles w/ bussards]' model into the Ent-J might suggest they still use regular warp drive in the 26th Century.

Doesn't mean much. The Borg still use regular warp in addition to their more exotic travel methods. Excelsior, when she had her transwarp drive, had nacelles which were outwardly identical to the ones she carried when she was powered by regular warp drive.

Am I imagining things or did somebody theorize that the excelsior "transwarp" was simply the "new warp scale" used in TNG (from the old one in TOS)?

Maybe that was on that other forum... well, even if it was, how about that idea? I realize it's not canonically stated, but, well, how about it?

I seem to remember that the Excelsior's captain told Scotty that he was looking forward to "beating some of the Enterprise's old speed records." Doesn't this imply that the ST3-TSFS Transwarp still worked in standard warp space? A 'wormhole shortcut' drive like the one used by the Borg is sufficiently different in operating principles that comparing the Excelsior- and Constitution Refit-class' relative FTL performance quite difficult.

Transwarp may just refer to 'better than warp' and not any specific set of operating principles.

That was always my theory. I don't know if I'm the one who stated it, but I had planned to.

Remember that the Ent-J was from an alternate timeline in which the Expanse wasn't destroyed in the mid-22nd century.

it was not (the battle was the reason for the expanse in first place).

Err...no. Is the Exelsior gets to point B form Point A faster than say the E-A it's faster regardless of the propulsion mechanism.

In the battle that Daniels showed Archer, the Delphic Expanse continued to exist and expand until the 26th century, when the Federation would finally win their decisive battle against the Sphere-builders. However, in the last episode of season 3, Enterprise destroyed the spheres with a graviton particle beam bounced off the main deflector dish, or something along those lines, thus rendering that timeline impossible.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh the headache of time travel. So Ent-J might not even exist at all eh. Just like Galaxy-X. Oh well.
