Enterprise: Erm... Okay.

Caught my first episode of Enterprise for over a season last night. Taken by itself it was better than what I remember, but in continuity with the other series, what the hell is Dr. Soong doing messing with eugenics?!? For that matter, what's he even doing alive at that point, much less as an already old man?

Incidentally, we see yet more of the pitifulness of Starfleet firepower vs. asteroids.

Funny, Rogue, I too watched that *thing* and the first episode I've seen in a season and a half. I too thought it was THE Soong. I saw it as another B&B rewrite on good ST. It was a hack job for Star Seed/Wrath of Kahn.

Down to and complete with ripped T-shirts for the 'Altered'.

Kahn's dudes had ripped up T-shirts and used looked because of the damned barren planet they were trapped on for years.

Well, according to the story, the "Altered" were trapped on that planet for some time (around 10 years) after Arik Soong got detained by the Fed--erm, Starfleet.

Though that doesn't excuse the fact that they continued to wear those clothes even after they captured the Klingon ship etc. Also, their clothing didn't really have a worn look to it, it just looked like somebody had taken a razor blade to it at random...

You sure it wasn't "Singh"? I always thought Khan's full name and Data's dad's name were awfully similar.

Coincidence, at least story-internally. Actually Khan and Noonien Soong were both named after an acquaintance of Roddenberry that he wanted to contact, hence the dobule name-dropping.

I know it's a coincidence (a stupid coincidence), my point is maybe they got the names confused, since it was Noonian Singh the eugenics one, and Noonien Soong the robots one.

Maybe nobody liked the way he soong, and he didn't singh anymore.

From the articles on trektoday.com, it sounds as though they wanted Brent Spiner to guest star and thought it would be ironic for Data's "ancestor" to be interested in eugenics as opposed to artificial intelligence.

Why do they have an urge to tie things in when there is no need to. Personally it makes it look contrived. Why do they need a character which has some relation to some other character from the future. Why can he not just be a totally different character?

*Ahem* Now that that's dealt with... Khan is Singh. Data's... ancestor is Soong. Now, whether or not they called his ancestor Singh in the episode is unknown to me-- I haven't seen it, though I'd be interested to-- but if they did, well, just more proof of B&B fucking up continuity...

Data's ancestor was called Soong.

There is no relationship between him and Khan Noonien Singh other than the fact that Khan was an augment, and Soong was raising augments.

Don't you guys ever get tired of me-tooing how much B&B suck? At least get your facts right if you do it: B&B had nothing to do with the Eugenics Arc episodes. And no . . . those episodes didn't have anyone calling Spiner's character Dr. Singh. There were references to Khan and Botany Bay, however.

Yeah that's my point, not that they're related, but that they're getting the names mixed up.

The eugenics labs are based in an asteroid. The Enterprise fires at said asteroid when they're running out of options to stop Soong from escaping with the augmented embryos and restarting the Eugenics Wars. The torpedoes have no visible effect besides shaking the asteroid a bit.

You get even a better idea about the firepower (or lack of it) of ENT era in the upcoming Vulcan episodes, where you see Vulcan ships bombarding a planet surface. Somebody with a good grasp of physics should do some analysis on that.

You don't need a good grasp of physics for the Vulcan bombardment.

Anyone with eyes and a brain could see that it was completely pathetic, merely doing similar damage to a modern artillary bombardment

EDIT: It might have been a little bit stronger, I havn't seen the episode in a while, but the fact that Archer and co. were still alive despite being in close proximity indicates it was probably at least sub kiloton in power

So far I have watched all of Season 4 and I have to agree from what people are saying here, It is a lot better. I hate that there isn't much screen time for both Hoshi and Travis, but I'm sure something later They will each have there time to shine.
The entire Soong storyline was better than I expected, but I realled liek the Vulcan plot better (so far the best thing in s4 for me).
