Forum policy

Post by Darth Wong »

A number of questions have been raised about the policy of this forum. The standard-issue boilerplate you all clicked on when registering asked that you not be abusive or offensive, but standards of abuse and offensiveness vary from community to community.

In the case of the Star Wars vs Star Trek community, those standards are pretty low. To date, I have only banned one person, and that was for being both trollish and abusive. Most importantly, he had taken to starting entire threads for the sole purpose of insulting other users, with no technical discussion merit whatsoever.

In general, the Star Wars vs Star Trek community expects and tolerates a much higher level of rudeness and insult than is normal for general society, and I see no reason why this forum should deviate from those standards. However, while the standards for manners may be lower here, they are still not nonexistent. Spamming, threats, or excessive trolling will be dealt with.

However, "mockery of stupid people" is OK :) For example, "that's not how it works, you moronic little dipshit." is probably acceptable, particularly if it occurs in the context of a post which actually makes some meaningful point. However, a thread entitled "(insert username here) is an idiot" or a series of posts insulting someone but making no other point is the sort of thing that may provoke me (or my dark Imperial minions) to unleash the fearsome powers of the Sith.

I hope this clears up those questions a little bit.

No, I disagree, you insipid little narcoleptic! I say that we can do this is a civilized manner, without having to point out that your mother is so fat, her panties are made by B.F. Goodrich! I think we can all get along, you worthless sack of jack'o'lanterns!

So if you insult but have a point that's tolerated (at least by the mods) put if your post is just mindless insults, not okay?

Thus my question does that not just give us free reign to insult people as long as we throw some vauge point in there?

Or am I reading to much into it

You could do that. You'd have to prove it though

Speaking of forum policy, is there some reason editing is disabled in this forum or was it just an oversight?
It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.

Well, Singuler Quartet, for the answer, you should see Dalton's post. In other words, it to keep someone from saying one thing, then changing what they said.

While that is a pathetic response, the approved method of getting around this is too quote, but whatever. I suppose that's a good enough reason.

I think you can edit shortly after you post it.

You can because you're a mod. Regular users can't. A lot of the more argument-filled discussion boards have a "no edit" policy to prevent people altering their arguments to make rebuttals look foolish.

On this board, the ASVS, "Pure Star Wars", and "Other Sci-Fi" boards have "no edit" rules in place because of the furious debating that tends to go on.
