Enterprise (NX-01) "shields"

Post by Lord Revan »

I watched Enterprise episode "E^2" this conformed to me that the NX-01 has (in addition to the Nav deflector) some sort shield system as the Enterprise "hull plating" can be disabled by damaging and/or destroying a hull plating relay since armor can't be disabled this must must be some kind of (shield) system. What do think this system is. (I think it's some kind adaption of SIF system).

IIRC, the NX has polarised hull plating, or something.

The hull probably has some magic radiation beam or something running through it to reflect energy from weapons. No traditional energy field-like shields.

Yeah, everytime they go into combat, Archer (or whoever is in command on the bridge) tells them to "polarize the hull plating".

Plating

I recall reading an interview in which it was stated that the "polarization" of the hull plating somehow makes it super hard. Althought when the hull is hit by weapons fire there seems to be a bluish glow, reminiscent of a shield in the other series.

Maybe the hull is magnetized or electrically charged to repel the ionized particles in beam weapons.

that's "activate the hull plating". That combined with hit FX made me assume that there is some sort of shield.

I also remember they saying "polarize the hull", at least in every episode I've watched. Maybe you've watched the only one where they say "activate"?

Maybe polorized hull plating is same thing as structural integrity fields.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Whenever they turn it on, you can see some kind of electric wave across the hull plating. The "field" itself is invisible but you can see the edges when it's forming.

I took it to mean the hull is made structurally stronger/harder to melt/vaporize, but the more damage it absorbs the weaker its effect becomes... kinda like the other type of shield.

Archer seemed to think it would aid the ship when entering a high-pressure atmosphere, thus I infere it improves structural strength; it is also used to improve resistence to high energy particle weapons, thus I infere it increases melting/boiling points, increases specific heat, both or something entirely else.

All in all, it does nothing structural integrety fields don't, so I would say it is a crude precursor to the common SIF's of later Trek.

Or, maybe bergam and braga couldn't come up with anything else that sounded cool besides "Polarized"!
