NX-01 Deflector Dish

Post by Aaron »

It is my unerstanding tha deflector dishes on Starfleet vessels use a combination of low level force fields and tractor beams to deflect space debris. So how does the pre-Federation Starfleet deflector dishes work? As far as I know they have neither technology.

no idea. Maybe it's a low yield particle beam, breaks up incomming matter before it hits the ship.

SSSHHHH! There's no need to point out any *more* plot holes, continuity errors or plain bad concept in ENT. Hey, they warp space around themselves to move - doesn't that mean that the dust and shit will flow around the ship anyway?

Only when in warp. :P

I like the particle beam idea, that could work, possibly. Break up small fragments, scatter the remains, most of it should be pushed to the side to some degree, and in space distances that is enough.

I can understand that the particle beam could break up the debris. That still leaves the issue of moving it aside. A warp field may cause it too flow around the ship but that only works at warp, unless they can generate a warp field without actually going to warp.

Considering that the characters stick to the floor, rather than float around, one would tend to think they developed some semblence of artificial gravity. Given this, they probably use 'gravimetrics' or some such crap to project a slight bit of gravity ahead of themselves to 'move' micro debris in their way.

*shrug* just a guess.

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Actually since IIRc tractor beams ARE an application of artificial gravity technology I don't see the preFeds having it as much of a problem.

then why the big deal about the NX-01 having to use grapplers because they don't have tractor beam tech yet (as I recall, T'Pol had to convince Archer to ask a Vulcan ship w/ tractor beams to help)?

Probably a case of refinment. The pre-feddies obviously can make their crew stick to the deck and perhaps 'shoot' out a brute force-ish beam to move interstellar debri, but the finess to move small objects around without screwing them up could be beyond their ability.

Well all ready know NX-01 has some kind of shield system (the active "hull plating"), so it's not too much of a leap of fate to assume the NX-01's Nav deflector could work the same way as NCC-1701(-#) deflector.
