If TNG was made today

Post by Sarevok »

Suppose TNG was made today instead of 1987. What would happen ? Would it have the same acclaimed success ?
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Surely Insurrection and Nemesis provide some clues to the answer. 8)

Luckily, however, it's highly probable that we wouldn't even have had the displeasure of the two being made if the series was done a decade or so later.

Way it could work out, it might be better or worse: on one hand, the time delay between then and now might have kept the original writers and actors from getting their positions, possibly getting people in their places with a bit better sense and less-developed brain bugs. On the other, if the originals somehow were able to snag their slots anyway, it'd have been ten or so more years for their poor ideas and bugs to fester.

Generally, I'd say that perhaps it'd do a bit better thanks to the advanced special effects, but as far as writing goes, it'd range from better or worse with new crew, or business as usual with the originals.

Yeah, but I bet you won't spend the next decade looking almost exactly the same as you do now.

That sounds like the begining of some fraternity hazing ritual.

"First we'll shave Vympel bald and then....hey where's the duct tape?" :D

One thing they could do if they made the show today is make use of the further development of SFX on television. I'd expect that we might not see quite so many of the same type of ships over and over because they had those models already built. It might be more like DS9 & Voyager where they almost start getting carried away with the variety and freaky design of the new Starfleet ships.

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the new designs but in some ways they don't quite seem to stick to the restrictions of the earlier ships that were supposedly designed a certain way because there was some reason they had to be.

If TNG was made today, the stories would be different, because politics have become more virulent, more hate-filled, more polarized over the last decade. The episode about the Rutian freedom fighters/terrorists, for example, would never get made today. The episodes which contain negative messages about religion would also be scrapped, and they would have a lot more combat, as well as better-looking women in skimpier clothes.

Basically, the people who thought 7 of 9 was the best thing about Voyager would be happier than pigs in shit. Everyone else would be disgusted.

Not necessarily, there was an S3 ENT episode which had less than favourable messages about religions. Mostly just fundamentalists in the ep though.

Hmmm, maybe the Tasha Yar character would actually be an action babe?

I wonder if that happened if films after Star Trek 6 would still have the TOS crew?

In Generations they could have met Pike or April. Meh at best.

FC would involve the Klingons trying to go back in time. Kirk sleeps with Lily.

Insurrection would be similar, though better because the crew would be more tempted by the age reversal. Kirk sleeps with Anij.

Nemesis would give us yet another Evil Kirk O'Doom to have fun with. Kirk sleeps with that Romulan chick.
