Trek Books for 2005

Post by JME2 »

From Trektoday:
Pocket Books editors and writers at the Shore Leave convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland announced news about several new Star Trek book projects over the weekend.

Psi Phi announced the titles for 2005-2006 release, which include an Enterprise novel about Hoshi Sato to be written by Dave Stern and the first Titan novel, set after Star Trek: Nemesis and focusing on Captain William Riker's command, tentatively titled Taking Wing, to be written by Andy Mangels & Michael A. Martin. Psi Phi has more information on the latter here.

A Deep Space Nine miniseries set during the Occupation, Terok Nor, was announced, though no authors or publication dates have been revealed yet. Worlds of Deep Space Nine writer Una McCormack will also write another DS9 novel, Hollow Men.

There will be a new Voyager trilogy String Theory, to be penned by Jeffrey Lang, Kirsten Beyer and Heather Jarman, and a Voyager anthology, whose title and editor have not yet been announced.

Two new Lost Era books - one likely focusing on Picard, the other on Sisko - are on the schedule, as are two Next Generation books, one by Michael Jan Friedman, the other by J.M. Dillard, set in the post-Nemesis era when many changes have been made in the crew. Gene DeWeese will also write a TNG book, Engines of Destiny.

A new series about the space station Vanguard, set during the original series, will be launched by David Mack, and editor Marco Palmieri will oversee Other Times, a series of speculative stories.

They should also write a book on the USS Equinox. The crew of the Equinox had an inferior ship than Voyger but still survived for a longtime. Their story of desparation would make a good novel.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

No New Frontier or DS9 series 2's? I hope they haven't decided to end those storylines.

NF's one of their popular titles; I'm sure something else is in the works. As for the post-DS9 stories, I'm also sure something is in the works; I highly doubt that the 'Worlds of DS9' trilogy will be the end of the storylines begun in 'Avatar'. What I am surprised about are 2 more Lost Era novels, but it does make sense given that they were all NYTimes bestsellers.

Well, we'll finally figure out what ship class the Titan belongs to. :)

Unofficially, at least.

On another note, I did some digging, and there is another NF book in the works called "After the Fall". With some fairly ominous cover art I might add.

I also did digging on DS9's 'Hollowman". While it's not a relaunch, it is however a followup of sorts to one of the most acclaimed Trek episodes of all time - In the Pale Moonlight. It deals more with the fallout of Vreenak's death, the effect if has on Garak and Sisko's relationships (something that was never really addressed as the series neared its end), and I believe the Tal Shiar's investigations as well.

Not to belittle any good writers out there, but who cares? After reading umpteen million paperbacks when I went through a Star Trek fan-whore binge a while back, I've lost interest in any Star Trek novelization.

If they really want to make a book, make it a canon-accepted tech book.

A lot of the early novels did suck, but over the last five years they've been getting better, more ambitious, and downright enjoyable, from NF and Post-DS9 to the Lost Era.

Of course that's simply my humble opinion...

I have to agree here; I want CANON books; then I'll start giving a
damn and buying the books again. And they better be good quality,
because that's what stopped me from buying SW books by pretty
much any author other than Zahn.

I can understand your point, but it's probably in the file of things not going to happen. I personally feel that the best Trek in the last five or six years and for the forseeable future has been in print form, whether it's canon or not. I'm not going to rush out and buy every one, but there are a few worth a look.

Got an update on these from the Shore Leave convention/report
When asked if there would be other post-finale Deep Space Nine titles, Palmieri answered affirmatively but was not yet ready to discuss what direction they would be taking the characters or storyline beyond Worlds of Deep Space Nine.
Aya wrote:Well, we'll finally figure out what ship class the Titan belongs to.
Also revealed at Shore Leave was that the Titan's starship class/designation would be revealed in the first book, and that a contest for fans to design what the exterior of the ship would look like will take place. Regarding the contest Palmieri has said, "No one should be too hasty trying to design the Titan just yet. The parameters will depend entirely on how the ship is described in the first novel. Plus, we haven't yet worked out all the details of exactly how the contest will be conducted, what formats are acceptable, who may participate, etc."

Palmieri has also said, "When Riker's ship is launched, the Dominion War has been over for four years, and Starfleet is at last ready to put this difficult period of its recent history behind it by returning in earnest to missions of peaceful exploration, diplomacy, and the expansion of knowledge. After the first novel about the ship going to Romulus, Titan will continue with character-driven stories emphasizing high adventure, personal drama, and scientific wonder."

So, are the New Frontier books really good? Are they worth reading?

Whoa, the Titan will go to Romulus? Some trek RPG site had a similar thing about the Titan's first mission, long before the books were announced.

I think they are at least. The series starts with a humanitarian mission sent out to render aid to a region where the local star empire collapsed into chaos and disorder. Instead of the typical trek high-tech, best-and-brightest, the mission handled by one Ambassador-class ship crewed by people who, while very skilled at what they do, are somewhat divergent from the starfleet norm (minor spoiler---

for example, at one point Captain Calhoun uses a torpedo bombardment to help solve a hostage crises, and he was shooting at the captors).

I'm not sure why people have such a need to have the Paramount Stamp Of Canonicity, when it's blatantly clear that nobody there in any position of authority gives half a damn about continuity or even the general quality of the franchise. It's just a fucking label at this point, because chances are they'd probably just wind up slapping such labels on shitty books and contradictory material anyway.

At this point, with the obvious exception of vs. debates, I really don't see any reason for fans not to try and develop and adopt their own canon, or even just to personally accept material which seems good to them and reject the shitty material.
