Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Brent Spiner (Data) is reportedly set to make a series of guest appearances on Enterprise this season.
Spiner's TNG co-star Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) told fans at the Dallas Sci-Fi Expo yesterday that Spiner will appear in three episodes, according to a report submitted by TrekToday reader Jason Weingartner.
The actor, who will reportedly appear without make-up, won't be playing his most familiar character, the android Data, but the grandfather of Data's creator, Dr. Noonien Soong. Soong appeared in the fourth-season Next Generation episode, "Brothers", in which Spiner pulled triple-duty, playing Data, his brother Lore, and Soong.
Sirtis reportedly told fans Spiner's first episode will start shooting next month, with November sweeps the most likely air date. Production on Enterprise's fourth season is scheduled to begin this week, when the premiere episode, "Storm Front", goes before the cameras.
Discussing his plans for Enterprise's fourth season recently, executive procducer Rick Berman said there was a possibility the show could feature "some actors, and possibly some characters, that are very familiar to our audience" (story).

Yes, god forbid a trek actor from one series wants to some guest stints on another trek series. Shame on Spiner, Stritis, Burton, Frankes, Stewart, Doohan, Kelly, de Lancie and the guy who played Barclay.JME2 wrote:No. No. No. No. No.
Can't they bloody come up with something original?!
Besides, humans being so long lived doesn't seem unusual in Trek. Hell, Bones was still alive by the time the E-D was beginning her journey. Also, time dilation is possible. In other words, don't bitch until you see the episodes he's in.

It's not so much that I don't want to see nods and references, or even the occassional crossover episode between series, but all this business with the meeting the direct ancestors pisses me off.
It's like Captain Archer sitting around and Trip wanders in saying 'captain, I've just invented these cool pastel coloured touch sensitive panels hidden under black glass, nudge nudge, wink wink, they may some day become widely used in every ship in the fleet because I am an engineering god superior to everyone who has gone before.'
Pisses me off...grrrrr.

the article said he'd be playing noonian soong's grandfather, which is at least plausible, as opposed to playing soong himse.Aya wrote:

Oh. Then why is he bitching then, other than it appears to be a trendy thing to do?Darth_Zod wrote:the article said he'd be playing noonian soong's grandfather, which is at least plausible, as opposed to playing soong himse.Aya wrote:

Because ENT needs to stop bringing up everything that has come for; it needs to concentrate on the 22nd century, not on the 24th Century. The Borg, the Ferengi, the TNG/VGR-esque plots - the list goes on and on for me. True, DS9 had this problem in its first 2 seasons, but that all changed when the Dominion came a-knockin'.Aya wrote:Oh. In the Juliana Tainer episode, someone mentioned that he was designed to show age.Aya wrote:Well, Spiners desire not to play Data anymore makes sense. He was getting on in years and beginning to show it. The problem of course is that Data shouldn't be showing signs of age.
The thing is, Enterprise hasn't earned the right to start mingling with real Trek. You can do that with TNG and DS9, because they were alright and at times excellent. ENT needs to focus more on great writing before it will be worthy of a nod from any of its superiors (those being every other Trek show except Voyager, which in terms of writing wasn't even on par with most of the slash based on it).
