It took a few hours, but as captain of the USS Fartacus, I liberated the alpha quadrant.
Your best bet is to stick with the Akira once you get it. Its rapid fire torpedo launcher is awesome, and it's more sturdy and faster than the Steamrunner.

Any strategy recommendations for starting up?

Hit and Run attacks on the Hideki's around your home system and cargo runs beaming at warp speed will get you started until you've got enough to get out of the runabout and fighter - if you keep at the hit and fade attacks with the smaller ships you can begin to wheel outwards from Bajor.

What, you guys just saw it?
I'm almost to a promethus.
My trick really was to attack the nearest sector with the lowest defense, kill one or two hidekis and maybe a Jem Hadar, then go home and repair. I almost flipped the sector by the time I got a Valiant, at which point I had no trouble finishing off the sector, gaining me 5k and getting me very close to a Defiant. Once I had a Defiant I tore through stuff very fast. The Steamrunner was awesome.

My strategy? Just do cargo runs in the runabout until you hit the Valient. Then stay in this mean SOB for a while. Go to a low point system (hover your mouse over the systems on the map to find out) and just blast away with pulse phasers. You can take out Galors pretty easy and run away fast to recharge shields and energy. Ignore the Defiant (nothing but a slower defiant with some torpedoes) and the Nova (the extra protection is useless when you can't quickly annihlate ships). Once you get the Steamrunner, same strategy except with torpedoes. Don't be afraid to warp to a liberated system, they have starbases that repair for little prestige. Then wait until the Akira which has the shields of the Intrepid but torpedoes. Ignore the Prometheus and just keep liberating systems. I doubt you'll make it to the Sovereign, once you get all systems liberated you get the uber Galaxy from All Good Things. Then just play around in the Bender system.
