In TOS? :? I'm having a difficult time believing that. There were numerous occasions where they were on an 'alien' planet (although the 'aliens' looked like romans, or nazis, or gangsters etc), where they were in danger and could have been beamed up if the Enterprise scanned for '2 humans and a Vulcan' - but they never were. Until they could get their hands on one of their communicators.

I liked the idea that you need to actually communicate with the ship in orbit to get beamed up. In my mind it makes sense.

They managed to scan for and find Spock on a ship full of Romulans.

In TOS: specifically, the ep where they steal the Cloaking Device.
