Proof that Gene Roddenberry would have hated ENT

Post by Superman »

Gene said this:
""For those at NBC who don't like it or 'dig it' I don't mind if they turn in thumbs down but I have NO respect or tolerance for the comments like ‘If it were just a little shorter, not so cerebral’... That kind of crap would only lead to us making a bad show...I am open to suggestions but not those that think the answer to improvement lies in things like ‘add a cute eleven year old boy’ or 'a dog should be on board the ship.' I will not stand still for that!"

I realize he was probably taking a shot at Battlestar Galactica with the the cute boy and dog bit but wasn't Roddenberry still around when Data got his cat? He was definately around when all of those kids and families ended up on the Ent-D. I wouldn't be surprised if he had originally intended Wesley to be even younger but didn't want to get accused of the "cute kid" bit. Instead going with the young genius crap.

Link to ebay and the letter

Since the letter was written in 1965 Roddenberry obviously wasn't talking about Battlestar Galactica but it's interesting that the kid and "dog" thing showed up on that show 10 years later.

AFAIK it was his idea in the first place to have families aboard the Enterprise.

I think the current version of the "cute eleven year old kid" is "the attrractive woman with large breasts wearing tight clothes" If I had to make a choice betwwen the two, I know which I prefer but neither add much to the story.

I thought we already got proof from the vibrations you feel when standing over his grave, cause he's spinning so damn fast under their.

That could just be from the DS9 war and Section 31 stuff.

Considering his womanizing reputation he might not have such a hard time with the women in catsuits replacing the cute kid and dog. :D

He might have been a little upset if he'd been alive while Braga was banging Jerry Ryan and she wasn't spending any time praying at the Roddenberry altar.

I thought he was cremated and put into space.

He was. IIRC his ashes have already burned up in the atmosphere.
Instead going with the young genius crap.
Some of the interviews he's done lead me to believe that Wesley was intended to be a younger version of himself.

Well, but the woman in the catsuit can add more to the story than the little kid can, if she's a well-written character as well as a babe in a catsuit.

I thought his ashes were flown up, but he didn't receive a burial in space. :?

Only a small portion of his ashes, enough to fit inside a container the size of a tube of lipstick, were sent up into orbit, along with a bunch of others. They did indeed burn up eventually.

They and their container can be vapourised when entering the atmosphere.

I don't think he would have hated it, perhaps looked at it as you would a hurt animal, something that requires a little bit of nurturing.
