Galaxy Class Modifications - DS9 S4
Was just reviewing Way of the Warrior and noticed something odd on the Federation reinforcements as they docked at the station at the end of Part 2, sadly, I wasnt able to get a screen cap or anything, but the Galaxy class docked on the upper pylons appeared to have unusual raised modules on it's nacelles, I'm sure they arent on the original, anyone else noticed this one? And any thoughts? It seems an odd thing to occur when they should have plenty of galaxy class models sitting around from TNG...

Correct. Some other DS9 variants also had larger shuttlebays, dark necks, all impulse engines running at once, and a few other mods. Not necessarily all at the same time.

or perhaps replace it with fuel, reactors, ammunition, phaser emmiters, targeting systems, ECM, ECCM....etcDarth_Zod wrote:now if they just get rid of all that unnecessary space, science labs and cargo bays, you'd have an almost decent warship.

Enemy starships don't seem to have any trouble nailing a Soveriegn class, why would they have any more trouble nailing a slimmed-down Galaxy?
No, take that space and arm it to the teeth... with all the volume that thing packs, a Galaxy hull could probably be refitted with enough firepower to tangle with a Soveriegn.

Wouldn't a federation ship with no science bays, holodecks, or wasted space just be a defiant? I'm sure they can fit the Galaxy Class's weapons into a ship that small if they wanted to do it.
Worf had a good line about the E-D being a formidable warship when "relieved of its bulk."
BTW does anyone have any calcs for the phaser cannon on the 3-nacelle Enterprise in AGT?

a defiant is effectively a 'no frills' warship designed to be used by limited personnel. If you removed the non essentials from a GCS but kept the size and shape, you could fill it with considerable armaments, lots of armor plating, shield emitters, torpedo launchers, phaser strips, etc.

Heck, you could even add a third nacelle and some big-ass phaser cannon.... and a cloaking device... and a dune buggy with its own shuttle!Darth_Zod wrote:a defiant is effectively a 'no frills' warship designed to be used by limited personnel. Wait. Scratch that last one.

No. Not enough surface area for the phaser strips; IIRC their power is partly a function of length/area. The Defiant's phaser strip is only a Type VIII, if I'm remembering right.Bob the Gunslinger wrote:Wouldn't a federation ship with no science bays, holodecks, or wasted space just be a defiant? I couldnt remember what was on the list for the war galaxy version modifications, and the bumps on the nacelles looked so odd, not like phaser strips, more like the bumps you see on Mon Calamari cruisers. Ah well... just struck me as odd, I blame SD.Net for this, I dont think I'd have given it much thought otherwise.Aya wrote:Say hello to the War Galaxy variant.

I wonder what kind of warships they could make if they didn't use those dainty nacelles, but rather BOP-style interior engines or Vulcan warp rings or something.
Those nacelles are just an incredible achilles' heel.

They keep their nacelles external because otherwise, alot of space would be taken up by them. BoP are the only Klingon ships that keep theirs internal.

The ship in question is the USS Venture. One of the more impressive War Galaxy mods. Those bumps on the warp engines are infact phaser arrays. The added structure is likely allowing for the fact there is no room to build in the sub-surface components for the phasers into the engine itself. So it appears to be an odd raised feature with a phaser array on top.
The Galaxy class has had a series of upgrades, even the original surviving First Flight Galaxies have been upgraded. The primary upgrades are to the Galaxy classes M/AM power core. Now the ship can sustain heavy enemy fire and still function.
The various War Galaxy mods that have been seen include:
Armored Spine
Tripple Impulse (saucer Impulse used with stardrive impulse)
Enlarged Shuttlebay (likely a carrier variant)
Added Phaser arrays
The DS9 TM indicates that the internal modular setup of the GCS allowed for a degree of modifications to be made quickly and easily when the fleets were being repaired after intense battles at the begining of the war. It even stated certain Galaxy class ships had far more weapon systems then normal and hinted at increased torpedo stocks and launchers.
Durring the Dominion War the Galaxy class provided the primary backbone of the Federation fleet. They are the largest ships in Starfleet along with being some of the most powerful. They could survive heavy enemy fire while dishing it out just as much. Torpedoes were often in low supply in the war so the Galaxy classes multiple phaser arrays made it an ideal weapons platform even in those situations.

I don't know if this counts since afaik it wasn't during the Dominion War, proper, but wasn't the Odysseus a Galaxy-class starship destroyed by the Dominion around the time of first contact between the Federation and the Dominion? I've heard it mentioned that the Jem'Hadar first battered the Ody's shields down then rammed it to make a statement.Aya wrote:How many Galaxys were destroyed during the D-War? It was actualy the USS Oddysy. The Oddysy's shields were not battered down. Federations shields at the time did not work against Dominion poloron beams.Kerneth wrote:I don't know if this counts since afaik it wasn't during the Dominion War, proper, but wasn't the Odysseus a Galaxy-class starship destroyed by the Dominion around the time of first contact between the Federation and the Dominion? I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
