Re: What courses do you have this semester?
I have a question for Hawkwings, NomAnor15, Venator etc.
Are you taking the courses (especially the Lib. Arts ones) not "related" to your faculty optionally, or are they mandatory?

Re: What courses do you have this semester?
It depends. For PhysEd, for example, I had only two classes to choose from, and I absolutely have to take one of them. For history, I had a wider range of possibilities, but again, I have to take at least one history class. So yes, they fulfill requirements which are mandatory, but I get some choice in which mandatory classes I take.[R_H] wrote:I have a question for Hawkwings, NomAnor15, Venator etc.

And then there's Wind Ensemble, which I'm taking just because I enjoy it.

Re: What courses do you have this semester?
This semester
Advanced Biometry
Population Genetics
Population Ecology of Animals
My research dealing with the predator and predation strategy recognition in bullfrog tadpoles...
And I am teaching General Zoology labs.
Next semester...
Amphibian Biology
Molecular Evolution*
Experimental Design.
* Instead of this, I may take Calculus 1. I took it as an undergrad, but it has been a while and my research focus requires a shit ton of math so It would be good to take the entire calc series, plus Diff eq and linear algebra...

Re: What courses do you have this semester?
I have to take a certain number of "General Education" courses as part of my graduation requirement. These feature classes in several different categories, and the classes I'm taking fulfill those requirements.

There seems to be a different philosophy towards general education here, probably because the arts are studied at different universities. That being said, from what I understand, there are classes mandatory classes in a wide range of arts, from politics to music.Hawkwings wrote:I have to take a certain number of "General Education" courses as part of my graduation requirement. Re: What courses do you have this semester?
the General Education program at USC has these stated goals:
Of course, as an engineer, I get some altered rules. I don't need to take a Cat III GE (but I ended up taking two anyways, since my first chem and physics classes counted) and I can substitute a Cat IV for another Cat I or II. And I don't need to take a foreign language. Since Cat I and II usually end up being history classes, I'm going to end up taking 3 history classes at least, one of which I've already done and another which I'm doing now.
There's six categories of GE classes, which are "Category I. Western Cultures and Traditions", "Category II. Global Cultures and Traditions", "Category III. Scientific Inquiry", "Category IV. Science and Its Significance", "Category V. Arts and Letters", and "Category VI. Social Issues". In addition, there is also a writing requirement, consisting of two courses, and a diversity requirement, which people usually fulfill while taking one of the six GE classes. There's also a foreign language requirement, but that's not part of the GE program. To teach students the skills needed for critical thinking, writing and reading.
To teach these skills in a specific context, i.e., social issues, cultures and traditions, science and society.
To teach students how to apply these skills so that they can find, evaluate, and use the vast amount of information now available via the media, the internet, new technologies, and traditional forms of knowledge.
To teach students to discern and assess the values that underlie various critical positions, and to articulate their own with coherence and integrity.
To encourage a passion for learning.

Re: What courses do you have this semester?
3rd year astrophysics major:
PHYS 105 - upper division classical mechanics
PHYS 116C - PDEs, probability and statistics, and series solutions to DEs (e.g., Legendre polynomials, etc.)
EE 130/L - basic optoelectronics course + lab, mostly to get more familiarity with an optical lab
RUS 4 (hopefully) - 4th quarter of Russian.
I may end up dropping the EE course if I get into the Russian course, because I'm doing research this quarter as well, and 105 and 116C promise to be tough.

What course are you doing there? I had a few strange issues come up during my coursework Masters back in 2007, but nothing quite that bad.Stark wrote:None, because everyone involved in postgrad administration at QUT is a fucking retard.
Currently doing part time my 1st semester of a Grad Diploma in Research Methods (Business) at UQ.

I'm also teaching two undergrad units, one each at UQ and QUT.

Re: What courses do you have this semester?
I'm not sure what my exact courses are, (we've not been given timetables yet) but the three main ones are going to be:
Feature Length Film Script first draft
Personal Project (I may do one of three things; a music video for one of my own songs, a horror short based on something that happened to my cousin one time in Bolton or a short "pilot" for a series I'm intending to write.)
Work based learning (I've already done some of it over Summer filming some bands and editing a music video for professional release. I should hopefully be able to work at Channel M in Manchester.)

It's my final semester and includes all the nonsense I've put off or wasn't allowed to take yet.
MGMT 439 - Strategic Management (roleplay of managing a company )
MGMT 335 - Small Business Management (only useful course I have)
MGMT 318 - Motivation & Leadership (lol)
INBS 484 - Seminar in International Business (ugh)
INBS 380 - Global Financial Environment (lol @ the title for something that essentially boils down to currency conversion and fluctuations)

Re: What courses do you have this semester?
Machine learning and data mining here:
Introduction to Bayesian Modelling (Actually covered part of this, but this course goes more in depth than my other courses.)
Hilbert-Huang Transform and its Applications
Data Analysis in Industrial Operator Support
Computational Genomics
Information Visualisation
Thesis Writing
Search Problems and Algorithms
Bankruptcy Prediction (Intensive course which I've already attended. I just need to complete the project.)
Obviously not all going at the same time since the semester is divided into two terms.
