I'm somewhat uncomfortable getting into a lot of speculation regarding Nitram, but liver dialysis has had FDA approval for acute liver failure since 2005 although in many ways it's still experimental. It can not sustain life for as long a time as renal dialysis can so it's considered a bridge to either transplant or, for some conditions, to self-recovery. I don't know if UVA has a "liver dialysis" capability but they do have a liver transplant center as well as renal dialysis.

Of course, I don't know exactly what's up with Nitram, but combined liver/renal failure is potentially reversible so really there is good reason to hope for recovery despite the seriousness of the situation, "recovery" meaning a return to where he was before this recent acute episode started. A transplant would likely solve the many problems associated with liver failure although, of course, transplantation brings its own set of on-going issues. The problem is, of course, the time required for a suitable organ to become available. And the cost.

I wish Nitram and Tevar all the best and I hope he can return home soon.

I love the smell of September in the morning. Once we got off at Richmond, walked up to the 'G, and there was no game on. Not one footballer in sight. But that cut grass smell, spring rain...it smelt like victory.

Let's see... 4-5 hours for Tevar to drive to the new location.. .then of course she'll want to see him... you know, I'm presuming that since we haven't heard from her she's with him, which is more important than updating us quickly.

Does anyone have Tevar's phone number? I have a friend who lives relatively near Charlottesville who's currently unemployed and I got her to agree to go there and just do things for Tev if she wants it, like get her stuff from the store and so on since she'll probably be living in hospital waiting rooms for the next few days... Since it's all I can really do I've been pulling favours to set that up but I need to get in touch with Tevar and see if she wants the help.

His kidney function is improving and he's no longer in intensive care, Tevar reported on LibArc. She's under the care of the local SCA and has a hotel with Nitram's mother. The liver docs will be by tomorrow to check on the condition of its liver but it isn't bad enough to keep his life in immediate danger right now.
