- A box of shampo and deodorant. How fucking nice. Left it there, promptly.
- The Big Book of Firearms, Illustrated. Rather encyclopaedic. I like it and don't like it, because it names allot of weapons but tells relatively little about them.
- An air-pistol (airsoft?). A bit uncomfortable but cool. Now, only to find a place to shoot it.
- A bag with some money. Mother was rather uncreative or lazy, but I don't blame her.
- Two books I might read, two big pieces of chocolate and a towel (?).

Re: Annual Loot Thread
Mario Kart Wii (well, as soon as we find a copy)
a couple old CDs (mid 90s)
a gift certificate for a back massage (I need one pretty bad, my upper back and neck have been pretty fucked up for the last while)
and technically, I got a stereo from my dad. It's a Sony Mini HiFi system, 530 Watts, has a subwoofer and apparently four speakers, one pair for high frequency and one pair for low. It's pretty nice, way too powerful for my room, but that's where it's going to stay until I bring it down for the next party, at which point it'll probably stay downstairs. And it came with an iPod dock, which has been a lot of fun (no burning CDs for me!)

If I might ask - why? Stuff like nice soaps and perfume are perfectly normal holiday gifts.- A box of shampo and deodorant. How fucking nice. Left it there, promptly.
Re: Annual Loot Thread
A brand-new Wii, with Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, and SSB: Brawl.
$100, which I plan to spend on an external hard drive.
Some candy.
And, as soon as it arrives, The World Ends with You, for my DS. Cowardly FedEx, not delivering it just because my area has been having the worst snowfall it has had in over twenty years... Mostly irritating because the gift I ordered for my brother is in the same shipment.

Because it says "you stink". A gift is a gesture. Tell me, what does it mean when someone gives you soap?If I might ask - why? Stuff like nice soaps and perfume are perfectly normal holiday gifts.
Perhaps I took it too personally in retrospect, but that's how I felt when I got it.

Re: Annual Loot Thread
You are seriously overthinking this. When someone gives you soap or bath salts or eau de toilette, most of the time it just means they didn't know what sort of personalized gift to get you so they just bought something useful.Zixinus wrote:Because it says "you stink". You also sound like a bit of a dick when it comes to presents.

I can understand what you mean... last year my aunt gave me a book called "How to be a Gentleman", which seemed like a pretty obvious commentary on my social skills.Zixinus wrote:Because it says "you stink". Oh, and while I'm posting in this thread again, thanks for the prayers, Alex Moon. Maybe it'll even cheer my mom up a little when I say I've got people praying for her.

Exactly, years ago the "I don't know what to get you" gift was soap on a rope. What's that supposed to mean, "Here’s soap so you don't stink in prison"?Bounty wrote:

As for my loot:
210$ in Chapters cards (which got me about 15 WH40K books)
40$ Best Buy card

Soap made from naked mole rats, or soap for the purpose of cleaning naked mole rats? Or just soap with a picture of a naked mole rat, on it?Kitsune wrote: Naked Mole Rat Soap

Re: Annual Loot Thread
Soap is not bad. You know the person will use it (hopefully everyday), so maybe they'll think of you. My cousins got my sister a bottle of hand soap (it smells pretty nice, I might use it myself if I can find where she put the bottle). She was kind of pissed because my cousin put it in a PS3 box, which was inside a bigger box, but that was just amusing to the rest of us (my mother hid her iPod case in a huge box too, it's kind of a tradition with her).
Seriously, Zix, look at all the people who got sweaters and socks and underwear. Gifts can be useful, everyday items too. Especially if they're a little bit nicer than what you usually get.

Re: Annual Loot Thread
On the big box trick: one year my dad got me a giant box full of scads of Star Wars action figures. So when my sister went to open her equally large present, she was expecting a bunch of stuff too. Instead she got a $400 digital camera and a pack of memory sticks. She was PISSED, even though her one gift was about four times more valuable than my many, many gifts.
I think he pulled a PS2 box trick on me too at some point, but I don't exactly remember it because I know he also actually got me the PS2.

Not necessarily, unless she made other comments in that respect. Depending on how old you are, where you are in life, she thought it may have provided some useful advice that you normally wouldn't think of. Or she may think of you as a gentleman and so thought you would find the book interesting. I have that book and there are a lot of things in there that the average man doesn't do that he should.Styphon wrote:I can understand what you mean... last year my aunt gave me a book called "How to be a Gentleman", which seemed like a pretty obvious commentary on my social skills.Zixinus wrote:Because it says "you stink".
