My grandfather just passed away

My grandfather just passed away
About two hours ago. Cancer. It had been slowly getting worse for the last three years, and two weeks ago, it quickened. He was in pain, but at the end, my mother says that he was peaceful.
He was a good man, the fifth child of Sicilian immigrants, and sadly the first to die. I feel really terrible for my great-aunts also, they had to watch the little brother they had helped raise waste away. He never made a lot of money but he worked hard until he retired and he cared about his family - when I graduated high school, I got a check for $3000 from him.
The funeral will probably be on Sunday or Monday of next week, in Rockford, Illinois. I will be a pallbearer - I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. My mom's just a basketcase, and so is my sister.
Goodbye, Grandpa Joe. You will be missed.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.
Oh man, please accept my condolences. My own grandpa's approaching his mid eighties. I can't even begin to imagine what life would be like without him. Again, I'm sorry for your family's loss.
Dear Lord, the gods have been good to me. As an offering, I present these milk and cookies. If you wish me to eat them instead, please give me no sign whatsoever *pauses* Thy will be done *munch munch munch*. - Homer Simpson

I understand what you're going through, Joe. It's horrible at first, losing anyone is. In time, however, the shock wears off and you appreciate the time you did have with him rather than get depressed over his inevitable moving on from this world.
I never managed to go to my grandfather's funeral. He lived the best part of 500 klicks from me and it was Xmas. But I'd have liked to have gone and paid my last respects, as I'm sure you will with yours.

I'm sorry to hear that. My condolences to you and your family.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I try not to think about my 86 year old grandfather in that connection.

My condolences. My grandfather on my dad's side passed away in January; it was a race between heart disease and stomach cancer. In the end, heart failure got him, and he died during his after dinner nap. It took me a while to get my head wrapped around the fact that he was gone. Don't worry if you don't know what to think or feel, that's only natural.
Artillery. Its what's for dinner.
