[Revote] Amendment to the Nomination Rules

Post by Surlethe »

According to the previous thread, here is the proposal, as put forward by the hon. CmdrWilkens:
Resolved that the segment of rule 2 ("One Senator, One Vote') reading "Who can nominate - Only Senators (no Governors, Chancellor, Executors or Emperor)" shall be changed to read as follows:

"Who can nominate - Every Senate member except the Chancellor"
I have recreated the poll, since it apparently closed too early for many honorable Senators to vote.

(Note: I did, in fact, vote in favor.)

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Yes indeed (which I suppose would be obvious given that I forwarded the motion).

Yea.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Would whoever voted against it come forward and state your reasons? I went back to re-read the thread where we discussed this and didn't see anyone really stating much against it, so I'm curious as to why you would vote no.

Well, my mail not arriving is certainly something that could go wrong and I should check into making sure that doesn't happen.

Uh, that is... I am appalled--insulted, even--that you think I would accept bribe while completely sober. I mean, after a few drinks and a cab ride home I'm sure my judgement could be altered, but while sober? How am I supposed to have plausible deniability? Or does this check include a mark up to take that into account that the others haven't?

Oh, please; you guys want a pay raise? Isn't conspiring behind closed doors to oppress the feeble masses enough?

I would respectfully submit that whoever voted no is more than fully entitled to have their reasons as their own without disclosing them to us. We don't have to have unanimity and I think its just trying too hard to go after it.

While that is true, the fact that a member of the Senate has voted "no" means that member has a reason to be apprehensive about the proposal. This reason may have been overlooked by those who have voted, and thus may merit consideration.

I doubt the request for disclosure was about unanimity so much as ensuring an informed decision process.

This place is not a rubberstamp. Nobody is going to be punished for having an opinion different from the majority, and Mad does have a good point.

I was looking for an explanation as to the votes against because no one brought up any reasons to be against it previously in the discussion thread, Greg. I was hoping they would voice their concerns so we could address them.
