Starglider wrote:I do read the senate forum from time to time, including the recent debate about voting (one punishment vote versus two etc). It seems to me that a good solution would be upgrading the board software to support instant-runoff voting; the original poll system was designed for simple popularity contests, but for serious matters instant-runoff is generally considered far superior to first-past-the-post. I'm reasonably competent at PHP and could probably write the appropriate patch to phpBB; if I was going to the effort of familiarising myself with the code base and database structure and making the appropriate additions I'd probably add various other sorts of vote (approval voting, Borda count, Condorcet etc) as well and let the poll starter select which type to use; it wouldn't be much additional effort. I expect there are other people on the board with the appropriate programming knowledge too, though I don't know if any have the time and the interest. If there's any interest in this I can start working on a prototype for people to try out (on a private sandbox server) - though with my current schedule this may take months. Presumably if the prototype gets finished, works ok and people like it then the question of whether to add the patch to this board can be raised seriously.

[Discussion] Potential change to board voting software
I got this message from Starglider, and it is a very interesting concept if it could be implemented by him, or other board members in cooperation. It certainly would help simplify our complexity grows by the day the voting process.

Let's see what he comes up with and put up an experimental project in Testing.

It really depends on the difficulty of the software alteration. If it can be done in a manner that doesn't require massive open-heart surgery on the board, I'm willing to give it a shot.

I have to admit, I'm getting really impressed by this.

Ok folks, back to more exciting stuff. Startglider has asked that we look at approving some of his projects.
The More Exciting Stuff
What I'd like to do is start putting motions forward for us to endorse the various mods that he has been working on.
About these endorsements:
I propose that we start polls for each mod we would like to see implimented. A simple yes, no or abstain question, the result of which will not count as a senatorial endorsement but will be used to count endorsements from individual senators.
Once the polls are up and the endorsements are made the decision will then rest with our executive who may or may not then make a final decision which may or may not represent the results or content of any of these endorsements or discussions.
...Kind of like a real senate really.
Anyway Let's start with the Enhanced Polls Mod
I propose we endorse for Starglider's Enhanced Polls Mod.

I'll second this. We need to look at them individually, and there are good mods there.Spyder wrote:About these endorsements:

I sustain the motion.
