"Crop Circles"

Post by Dillon »

So what does everyone here think of those things? Think they actually have something to do with extra-terrestrials, or if not, then what?

I thought it was recently proven that crop circles were part of a worldwide practical joke. They had members of the group doing the circles on a TV show about a year ago, showing how they did it, basically using some sort of stilt device with big flat feet that stomped the crops into the ground.

Let's try an application of Occam's Razor.

Theory #1: Crop circles are the result of human fraud. This requires the existence of human dishonesty and the possibility that humans have the technological capabilities to physically make them (both confirmed through observation and experiment).

Theory #2: Crop circles are the result of alien visitation. This requires the existence of aliens who can exceed te speed of light and travel dozens, perhaps hundreds or even thousands of light years to Earth, as well as unknown motivations which would cause them to make these circles rather than undertaking some more grandiose task (neither is confirmed, and the first may even be impossible).

Note: theory #2 adds an extra term to the equation (the aliens) even though both theories can successfully explain the phenomena. This is a good example of Occam's Razor in action.

One more question: what kind of idiot considers human dishonesty more implausible than aliens violating the known laws of physics and travelling all the way here just so they can make weird patterns in farmer's fields?

Aliens make crop circles?! :D
I have been making those for years when my lawn gets too long. All you need is a 2x4 with a rope attached to both ends, then a stick to act ast the center of the circle, and about 50ft of string to make sure a perfect circle will be made. To make a basic circle, just hold one end of the string while the other is attached to the center stick (It will wind around as you go) then flatten the "canvas" with the 2x4 as you go around and around. It will take a while but the effect is nearly the same as anything you see on tv. All other shapes are an extention of the basic procedure I just out lined.

I understand that producers of the new movie about crop circles actually ordered the creation of several crop circles in order to build up hype for the movie's release.

If aliens do make crop circles, then they are very sadistic, Look how much food goes to waste when one is made.

THEY ARE TRYING TO CONQURE USE BY STARVATION!

You guys are all wrong. Magnetic bracelets charge negative ions in a pyramidal structure. In combination with tinfoil hats, it can change your alignment with the cosmos, thus bringing you good karma. And sometimes good luck.

But wearing a megnetic ring and a tin foil hat will prevent you from ever getting laid again.

Crop circles. Yeesh. I remember long ago when a bunch of us were looking at some aerial photos. I forget the exact name but you have to take two photos, overlap them, and then peer through some kind of goggles to get a 3-D effect. Anyhow, we had two strange photos of a clear-cut. No access roads, no equipment, and yet the logs were not there! One guy quipped,"Loggers from space!" We had a good laugh over that one. Then we had some beer.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might if they screamed all the time for no good reason.

I have always wanted to get my friends together and go make a few crop circles just to fuck with the media.

When I saw the trailer for "Signs" in the theater one of the things they said was "What kind of device can bend a stalk of wheat without breaking it." I stood up and shouted "A two-by-four." The entire theater started laughing and applauding. I was proud of myself for about two seconds. Then my friends all said that they were thinking that, and so it wasn't an original thought.

I have a similar reaction to the "too perfect to be made by hand line."

I like the director's previous work, so I'll probably go see it and just suspend disbelief.

More likely loggers using helicopters. <starts digging through mountain of old Air & Space Mags> I know there's an article about it somewhere in here. Oh, well.

Ah, but the crop circles are too perfect to be made by hand. That's why you also need exotic alien technology such as "string" and "wooden boards" :)

Try to make sure you're on good terms with the crop owner. . .

Beowulf. You are thinking of helilogging right? Very expensive and usually in hard to reach areas. They do quite a bit of that along B.C.'s coast.
